Endeavoring to Persevere
So close, and still so far away.  For Obeta could see the smoke coming out from the chimney of their house, but on the high plains, nothing is nearly as close as it seems to be from a distance.

It was disheartening to see that at least a foot of new snow had fallen, but at least she had gathered enough thatching material to patch the hole that had formed in the southwestern corner of the roof during the last big blow.  With ominous clouds gathered overhead promising more to soon come, she pressed on.

The irony of the situation was not lost on Obeta.  For one of the last things her poppa had said to her was that one must be willing to always endeavor to persevere in order to survive out in the wild and wooly west.  He had drew a line in the sand that day for a young girl he believed was not ready, and she had dared to cross it by following one of the hired hands on what she believed would be a great romantic adventure.

Had God also drew a line He was daring her to cross?  For the edge of where the heavier snow had fallen formed a straight line that could be clearly seen going for miles in both directions, and here she was about to cross it.  The thought of her being such a rebel made Obeta smile.

So close, and still so far away.  She would be home soon enough…she hoped.  Yes, as long as there was some hope to cling to, Obeta believed that she could endeavor to persevere.

  3. I was glad when she smiled at her decision as the rebel and didn't give up even though her romantic adventure is full of handwork!

  4. This definitely captures the spirit of the image! I like the idea of the line that Obeta crosses and must continue to cross, as she heads for home.

one thing ... look at the words 'drew' and rethink your form of tense ... he drew or he had drawn. Later, drawn is the correct form ... had God also drawn ...

    hope this helps ...

  5. Fascinating to read. Feels like part of a much larger story. Nicely penned, indeed.

  10. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Ginny!!! OH my, a much larger story really did come to life, which could be a problem with this series. For my wife will tell anyone within earshot that I seldom know when to shut up, and we are supposed to be publishing SHORT efforts! Sigh.

  15. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Ann!!! I have retained Duke as my literary agent, and he is demanding a slab of bacon be fried and served family-style before negotiations on publishing the rest of the story can begin.
