ATF: November Numbing

This weekly series will include as many of my all-time favorite (ATF) tunes as I can get my grubby little hands on (so to speak).  Now, each one included in each edition will have some connection with the other—albeit only as a figment of my imagination, but they will not be numbered.  For I just cannot bring myself to rate some higher than others.  So, this will not be a countdown, but if you are enjoying them as much as I do, it won’t matter.  Besides, with no countdown, this could go on forever and ever!  Oh, and despite the fact that there is absolutely no way your musical tastes could be as exquisite as mine, I welcome any suggestions you might dare to make.  For I am, after all, quite magnanimous by nature.

November Rain
Guns ‘n’ Roses
When I look into your eyes
I can see a love restrained
But darlin' when I hold you
Don't you know I feel the same
Yeah
Nothin' lasts forever
And we both know hearts can change
And it's hard to hold a candle
In the cold November rain
We've been through this
Such a long long time
Just tryin' to kill the pain
Oh yeah
But lovers always come
And lovers always go
And no one's really sure
Who's lettin' go today
Walkin’ away
And if we take the time
To lay it on the line
I could rest my head just knowin'
That you were mine
All mine
So when you want to love me
Then darlin' don't refrain
Or I'll just end up walkin'
In the cold November rain

Do you need some time
On your own
Do you need some time
All alone
Ooh everybody needs some time
On their own
Ooh don't you know you need some time
All alone

I know it's hard to keep an open heart
When even friends seem out to harm you
But if you could heal the broken heart
Wouldn't time be out to charm you
Whoa oh oh oh oh

Sometimes I need some time
On my own
Sometimes I need some time
All alone
Ooh everybody needs some time
On their own
Ooh don't you know you need some time
All alone

And when your fears subside
And shadows still remain
Oh yeah
I know that you can love me
When there's no one left to blame
So never mind the darkness
We still can find a way
Nothin' lasts forever
Even cold November rain

Don't ya think that you need somebody
Don't ya think that you need someone
Everybody needs somebody
You're not the only one
You're not the only one
Don't ya think that you need somebody
Don't ya think that you need someone
Everybody needs somebody
You're not the only one
You're not the only one
Don't ya think that you need somebody
Don't ya think that you need someone
Everybody needs somebody
You're not the only one
You're not the only one
Don't ya think that you need somebody
Don't ya think that you need someone
Everybody needs somebody

8th of November
Big & Rich
Hello, I’m Kris Kristofferson.  On November 8th, 1965, the 173rd Airborne Brigade on Operation Hump, Warzone D in Viet Nam, were ambushed by over 1,200 VC.  48 American soldiers lost their lives.  Severely wounded and risking his own life, Lawrence Joel, a medic, was the first living black man since the Spanish-American War to receive the United States Medal of Honor for saving so many lives in the midst of battle that day.  Our friend, Niles Harris, retired 25 years, United States Army, the guy who gave Big Kenny his top hat, was one of the wounded, who lived.  This song is his story.  Caught in the action of kill or be killed, greater love hath no man than to lay down his life for his brother.

Said goodbye to his momma
As he left South Dakota
To fight for the red white and blue
He was 19 and green
With a new M-16
Just doin’ what he had to do
He was dropped in the jungle
Where the choppers would rumble
With the smell of napalm in the air
And the sergeant said
Look up ahead
Like a dark evil cloud
1,200 came down
On him and 29 more
They fought for their lives
But most of them died
In the 173rd Airborne

On the 8th of November
The angels were cryin’
As they carried his brothers away
With the fire rainin’ down
And the hell all around
There were few men left standin’ that day
Saw the eagle fly
Through a clear blue sky
1965
The 8th of November

Now he's 58
And his pony tail's gray
But the battle still plays in his head
He limps when he walks
But he's strong when he talks
About the shrapnel they left in his leg
He puts on a gray suit
Over his airborne tattoo
And he ties it on one time a year
And remembers the fallen
As he orders a tall one
And swallows it down with his tears

On the 8th of November
The angels were cryin’
As they carried his brothers away
With the fire rainin’ down
And the hell all around
There were few men left standin’ that day
Saw the eagle fly
Through a clear blue sky
1965
The 8th of November

Saw the eagle fly
Through a clear blue sky
1965
65
65
The 8th of November
On the 8th of November
The angels were cryin’
As they carried his brothers away
With the fire rainin’ down
And the hell all around
There were few men left standin’ that day
On the 8th of November
The angels were cryin’

    1. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Shadow!!! I truly love most heavy metal ballads, and November Rain is a very powerful song in a number of ways. Hey, my birthday is coming up on the 24th.

By the way, what's the deal with the black diamond question marks? I have seen them and others like them used before. Are they special characters, and if they are, how are they made?

  4. Dear Jerry, The November Rain is classic. The 8th of Nov. is heart wrenching. It is a time that is unfortunately forgotten except for those of us who lived through this time. Simply heartbreaking. Catherine

    1. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Catherine!!! Yes, and what makes the personal losses far too many families suffered from the Vietnam War even more heartbreaking is that we should have never been involved in the first-place. For the North Vietnamese had no desire to export communism throughout the region and were certainly no friends of the Chinese.
