ATF: Dynamic Duos

This weekly series will include as many of my all-time favorite (ATF) tunes as I can get my grubby little hands on (so to speak).  Now, each one included in each edition will have some connection with the other—albeit only as a figment of my imagination, but they will not be numbered.  For I just cannot bring myself to rate some higher than others.  So, this will not be a countdown, but if you are enjoying them as much as I do, it won’t matter.  Besides, with no countdown, this could go on forever and ever!  Oh, and despite the fact that there is absolutely no way your musical tastes could be as exquisite as mine, I welcome any suggestions you might dare to make.  For I am, after all, quite magnanimous by nature.

Pancho and Lefty
Willie Nelson & Merle Haggard
Livin’ on the road my friend
Was gonna keep you free and clean
Now you wear your skin like iron
And your breath's as hard as kerosene
You weren't your mama's only boy
But her favorite one it seems
She began to cry when you said goodbye
And sank into your dreams

Pancho was a bandit boy
His horse was fast as polished steel
He wore his gun outside his pants
For all the honest world to feel
Pancho met his match you know
On the deserts down in Mexico
Nobody heard his dyin' words
Ah but that's the way it goes

All the Federales say
They could've had him any day
We only let him slip away
Out of kindness I suppose

Lefty he can't sing the blues
All night long like he used to
The dust that Pancho bit down south
Ended up in Lefty's mouth
The day they laid poor Pancho low
Lefty split for Ohio
Where he got the bread to go
There ain't nobody knows

All the Federales say
They could've had him any day
We only let him slip away
Out of kindness I suppose

The poets tell how Pancho fell
And Lefty's livin’ in a cheap hotel
The desert's quiet and Cleveland's cold
And so the story ends we're told
Pancho needs your prayers it's true
But save a few for Lefty too
He only did what he had to do
And now he's growin’ old

All the Federales say
They could've had him any day
We only let him go so long
Out of kindness I suppose
A few grey Federales say
Could've had him any day
We only let him go so long
out of kindness I suppose

Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around
Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty
Baby you'll come knockin’ on my front door
Same old line you used to use before
I said
Yeah
Well
What am I supposed to do
I didn't know what I was getting’ into

So you've had a little trouble in town
Now you're keepin’ some demon down
Stop draggin' my
Stop draggin' my
Stop draggin' my heart around

It's hard to think about
What you've wanted
It's hard to think about what you've lost
This doesn't have to be the big get even
This doesn't have to be anything at all

I know you really want to tell me good-bye
I know you really want to be your own girl

Baby you could never look me in the eye
Yeah you buckle with the weight of the world
Stop draggin' my
Stop draggin' my
Stop draggin' my heart around

There's people runnin’ 'round loose in the world
Ain't got nothin’ better to do
Than make a meal of some bright-eyed kid
You need someone lookin’ after you

I know you really want to tell me good-bye
I know you really want to be your own girl

Baby you could never look me in the eye
Yeah you buckle with the weight of the world
Stop draggin' my
Stop draggin' my
Stop draggin' my heart around

Stop draggin' my heart around

Stop draggin' my heart around
Hey hey hey hey hey

Stop draggin' my heart around
Hey hey hey hey hey

  1. Love them! Love them! And I love Willie Nelson. I saw him live in concert a few years ago and he certainly didn't disappoint. He is a one and only...they threw away the mold when he was made! :)

    1. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Lee!!! I got to scrub the bugs off of the windshield of his main tour buss late one night while I was working part-time as a fuel attendant at the 76 truckstop in Amarillo during the fall of '85.

  2. Stevie Nicks & Tom Petty - now you're talking! But I didn't realise they had been a due. Re ceramic poppies at the Tower - yes, amazing, saw them at the weekend.

    1. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Mike!!! I think they only hooked up on a duet once, which is a same. For their voices certainly compliment each other.

    1. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Ann!!! Hey, I was just given the solution to your troubles with Gibbs a little bit ago. Well, bacon contains an abundance of salt, which soaks up puppy pee!

  4. Perfect duos but you know who really came to mind. Batman and Robin of course!

  5. dear Jerry, These are some good duos but I think Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty have to win this one. Good picks though. Have a great Friday. Catherine

    1. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Catherine!!! Methinks it is way too close to call, but I can see where a pure rocker would give Stevie and Tom the nod.
