ATF: Youthful Indiscretions

This weekly series will include as many of my all-time favorite (ATF) tunes as I can get my grubby little hands on (so to speak).  Now, each one included in each edition will have some connection with the other—albeit only as a figment of my imagination, but they will not be numbered.  For I just cannot bring myself to rate some higher than others.  So, this will not be a countdown, but if you are enjoying them as much as I do, it won’t matter.  Besides, with no countdown, this could go on forever and ever!  Oh, and despite the fact that there is absolutely no way that your musical tastes can be as exquisite as mine, I welcome any suggestions you might dare to make.  For I am, after all, quite magnanimous by nature.

We Are Young
Fun.
Give me a second
I
I need to get my story straight
My friends are in the bathroom
Getting higher
Than the Empire State
My lover
She's waiting for me
Just across the bar
My seat's been taken by some sunglasses
Asking about a scar
And I know I gave it to you months ago
I know you're trying to forget
But between the drinks and subtle things
The holes in my apologies
You know
I'm trying hard to take it back
So if by the time
The bar closes
And you feel like falling down
I'll carry
You home

Tonight
We are young
So let's set the world on fire
We can burn brighter
Than the sun
Tonight
We are young
So let's set the world on fire
We can burn brighter
Than the sun

Now I know it
I'm not
All that
You got
I guess that I
I just thought
Maybe we could find new ways to fall apart
But our friends are back
So let's raise a cup
'Cause I found someone
To carry me home

Tonight
We are young
So let's set the world on fire
We can burn brighter
Than the sun
Tonight
We are young
So let's set the world on fire
We can burn brighter
Than the sun

Carry me
 Home tonight
Just carry me
Home tonight
Carry me
Home tonight
Just carry me
Home tonight
The world is on my side
I have no reason to run
So will someone come
And carry me
Home tonight
The angles never arrived
But I can hear the choir
So will someone come
and carry me home

Tonight
We are young
So let's set the world on fire
We can burn brighter
Than the sun
Tonight
We are young
So let's set the world on fire
We can burn brighter
Than the sun

So if by the time
The bar closes
And you feel like falling down
I'll carry
You home
Tonight

The Freshmen
The Verve Pipe
When I was young I knew everything
And she a punk who rarely ever took advice
Now I'm guilt-stricken
Sobbin’
With my head on the floor
Stop a baby's breath
And a shoe full of rice
No

I can't be held responsible
'Cause she was touchin’ her face
I won't be held responsible
She fell in love in the first place

For the life of me
I cannot remember
What made us think that we were wise
And we'd never compromise
For the life of me
I cannot believe
We'd ever die
For these sins
We were merely freshmen

My best friend took a week's vacation to forget her
His girl took a week's worth of valium and slept
And now he's guilt-stricken
Sobbin’
With his head on the floor
Thinks about her now
And how he never really wept
He says

I can't be held responsible
'Cause she was touchin’ her face
I won't be held responsible
She fell in love in the first place

For the life of me
I cannot remember
What made us think that we were wise
And we'd never compromise
For the life of me
I cannot believe
We'd ever die
For these sins
We were merely freshmen

We've tried to wash our hands of all of this
We never talk of our lackin’ relationships
And how we're guilt-stricken
Sobbin’
With our heads on the floor
We fell through the ice
When we tried not to slip
We'd say

I can't be held responsible
'Cause she was touchin’ her face
And I won't be held responsible
She fell in love in the first place

For the life of me
I cannot remember
What made us think that we were wise
And we'd never compromise
For the life of me
I cannot believe
We'd ever die
For these sins
We were merely freshmen
For the life of me
I cannot remember
What made us think that we were wise
And we'd never compromise
For the life of me
I cannot believe
We'd ever die
For these sins
We were merely freshmen

We were merely freshmen

We were only freshmen

  1. We really live in an age that celebrates youth, as these songs testify to. I often wish age and maturity were better respected.

    1. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Stephen!!! Well, these songs were written and performed by the young, and they naturally want to celebrate their actions. Although, I consider both of these songs as being bittersweet at best, with The Freshmen being being full of deep anguish.

  3. I don't know the first song...I doubt I've heard it before, and as for the second one, the video is not available here. I've probably not heard it before either. The lyrics of both aren't frivolous. The world today is not frivolous, so I guess they're appropriate.

    1. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Lee!!! The first song came out a couple of years ago by a group I had never heard of before. Oh, and both songs are indeed quite serious, with the losing control in the first song far too often leading to the intense grief expressed in the second song. I am really surprised by you not being able to view/listen to the video down there since it came from the band's official Vevo/YouTube channel. Alas, international copyright laws are such a mess.
