TFT: Counting Crows

Not every song that will be featured here will be what is generally considered as being “Christian” in the eyes of this world.  For some will be anguished cries from the pit of despair, and others will be quite obviously fervent rants of rebellion.  Nonetheless, be assured that they will all be of our Heavenly Father (in one way or another) and I hope that you have been given ears to hear the message.

Mr. Jones
Counting Crows
I was down at the New Amsterdam
Staring at this yellow-haired girl
Mr. Jones strikes up a conversation
With this black-haired
Flamenco dancer
She dances while his father plays guitar
She's suddenly beautiful
We all want something beautiful
Man I wish I was beautiful
So come dance this silence
Down through the morning
Cut up Maria
Show me some of them Spanish dances
Pass me a bottle
Mr. Jones
Believe in me
Help me believe in anything
‘Cause I
I want to be someone
Who believes

Mr. Jones and me
Tell each other fairy tales
Stare at the beautiful women
She's looking at you
Ah no no
She's looking at me

Smiling in the bright lights
Coming through in stereo
When everybody loves you
You can never be lonely
I will paint my picture
Paint myself in blue
And red
And black and gray
All of the beautiful colors are
Very very meaningful
Gray is my favorite color
I felt so symbolic
Yesterday
If I knew Picasso
I would buy myself a gray guitar
And play

Mr. Jones and me
Look into the future
Stare at the beautiful women
She's looking at you
I don't think so
She's looking at me

Standing in the spotlight
I bought myself a gray guitar
When everybody loves me
I will never be lonely
I will never be lonely
Never gonna be
Lonely
I want to be a lion
Everybody wants to pass as cats
We all want to be big big stars
But we got different reasons for that
Believe in me
Because I don't believe in anything
And I
I want to be someone
To believe
To believe
To believe

Mr. Jones and me
Stumbling through the barrio
Yeah we stare at the beautiful women
She's perfect for you
Man there's got to be
somebody for me
I want to be Bob Dylan
Mr. Jones wishes he was someone
Just a little more funky
When everybody loves you son
That's just about as
Funky as you can be

Mr. Jones and me
Staring at the video
When I look at the television
I want to see me
Staring right back at me
We all want to be big stars
But we don't know why
And we don't know how
But when everybody loves me
I'm going to be just
About as happy as I can be

Mr. Jones and me
We're gonna be big stars

A Long December
Counting Crows
A long December
And there's reason to believe
Maybe this year will be
Better than the last
I can't remember
The last thing that you said
As you were leavin'
Now the days go by so fast

And it's one more day up in the canyons
And it's one more night in Hollywood
If you think that I could be forgiven
I wish you would

The smell of hospitals
In winter
And the feeling
That it's all a lot of oysters
But no pearls
All at once
You look across a crowded room
To see the way that light attaches
To a girl

And it's one more day up in the canyons
And it's one more night in Hollywood
If you think you might come to California
I think you should

Drove up to Hillside Manor
Sometime after two a.m.
And talked a little while
About the year
I guess the winter makes you
Laugh a little slower
Makes you
Talk a little lower
About the things
You could not show her

And it's been a long December
And there's reason to believe
Maybe this year will be
Better than the last
I can't remember
All the times I tried to tell myself
To hold on
To these moments
As they pass

And it's one more day up in the canyon
And it's one more night in Hollywood
It's been so long since I've seen the ocean
I guess I should

  1. Whoa - it's not that this stuff is bad it's just that as music it lacks musicality - the first song is particularly awful, the second less than mediocre. I've heard OF this group but never heard them - and with a bit of luck will never hear them again. Is this more of your "alternate" rock? If so, I know what it is alternate to - music! It's too bad that this stuff has become the soundtrack of some people's lives - seriously.

  2. Thanks for stopping by again, my dear Grace!!! Would it help if they added a doo-wop or two to their songs?

  3. Thanks for stopping by again, my dear Ann!!! Neither am I to any great extent, but their lyrics are quite telling--especially those to "A Long December."

  4. I never much cared for doo-wop music and I'm from the Bronx - as with all things, books, music, art etc - There is no one genre or artist that I admire unequivocally or in totality. Even my most admired Miss Billie Holiday put out some I consider less than wonderful. I don't love ALL Italian operas, or all of Johnny Cash or all CCR or all of Frank Sinatra and I've discovered, in retrospect, that I don't care much for the Beatles but that I still like Donovan and the early Stones and yadda yadda yadda...

  5. Thanks for stopping by again, my dear Grace!!! I fully understand what you are saying. For I am more passionate about WhiteHeart than any other group, and yet, they recorded a few songs that I do not like at all.
