Joni Mitchell vs. Counting Crows

Big Yellow Taxi
Joni Mitchell
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
With a pink hotel
A boutique
And a swinging hot spot

Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
‘Til it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

They took all the trees
And put them in a tree museum
Then they charged all the people
A dollar and a half
Just to see 'em

Don't it always seem to go,
That you don't know what you've got
‘Til it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

Hey farmer farmer
Put away that DDT now
Give me spots on my apples
But leave me the birds and the bees
Please

Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
‘Til it’s gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

Late last night
I heard that screen door slam
And a big yellow taxi
Come and took away my old man

Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
‘Til it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

Late last night
I heard that screen door slam
And a big yellow tractor
Come and took away my house
It took away my land

I said
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
‘Til it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

Counting Crows & Vanessa Carlton
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
With a pink hotel
A boutique
And a swingin' hot spot

Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you got
‘Til it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

Ooooh
Bop bop bop
Ooooh
Bop bop bop

They took all the trees
And put em in a tree museum
And they charged the people a dollar and a half
To see them

No no no

Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you got
‘Til it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

Ooooh
Bop bop bop
Ooooh
Bop bop bop

Hey farmer farmer
Put away your DDT
I don't care about spots on my apples,
Leave me the birds and the bees
Please

Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you got
‘Til it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
Hey now
They paved paradise
To put up a parking lot

Why not

Ooooh
Bop bop bop
Ooooh
Bop bop bop

Listen
Late last night
I heard the screen door slam
And a big yellow taxi
Took my girl away

Now don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you got
‘Til it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
Hey now now
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you got
‘Til it's gone
They paved paradise
To put up a parking lot
Why not
They paved paradise
To put up a parking lot
Hey hey hey
Paved paradise
To put up a parking lot

Ooooh
Bop bop bop
Ooooh
Bop bop bop

I don't wanna give it
Why you wanna give it
Why you wanna giving it all away
Hey hey hey
Now you wanna give it
I should wanna give it
Now you wanna giving it all away
Now now
I don't wanna give it
Why you wanna give it
Why you wanna giving it all away
Hey hey hey
Now you wanna give it
I should wanna give it
Cause you’re giving it all away
Hey hey
Givin’ it all
Givin’ it all away
Yeah yeah
Why do you want me
Why do you want me
Cause you're givin’ it all away
Hey
Paved paradise
To put up a parking lot

  1. Counting Crows wins that one! That guy actually can sing - never would have know it from those two songs you posted the other day. And I like the vaguely Latin beat. I was never a Joni Mitchell fan - thin, high-pitched squeaky voice - Bleh.

  3. Thanks for stopping by again, my dear Grace!!! Whoa, I would have bet good money that you would absolutely hate their version of Joni's song. Oh, and Dragon's Alley is now listed. I am sorry for not doing it sooner, and hope you heal quickly.

  4. Thanks for stopping by again, my dear Sandie!!! I am with Grace about liking the Counting Crows version better, but her version is still a classic.

  5. I know I have a cd with this song on it but not by either one of these artists. I can't for the life of me remember who it is though

  6. Counting Crows. But I still like her version too. You can tell a good song when it doesn't really matter who sings it and you still like it!

I hope you didn't take down the Duck and Wheel to make room for Grace in your blogroll. ;)

  7. Thanks for stopping by again, my dear Ann!!! Would it have been Amy Grant? If not, the link below contains a list of who has covered the song.

  8. Thanks for stopping by again, my dear Lin!!! I am the same way with these versions, and you are certainly right about a good song being able to hold its own against whoever wants to sing it.

Oh, and Duck and Wheel is still there, but Grace moved in next door. Please don't be encouraging her to pick on me anymore than she has been.
