ATF: Rocky Mountain Highs

This series will include as many of my all-time favorite (ATF) tunes as I can get my grubby little hands on (so to speak).  Now, each one included in each edition will have some connection with the other—albeit only as a figment of my imagination, but they will not be numbered.  For I just cannot bring myself to rate some higher than others.  So, this will not be a countdown, but if you are enjoying them as much as I do, it won’t matter.  Besides, with no countdown, this could go on forever and ever!  Oh, and despite the fact that there is absolutely no way your musical tastes could be as exquisite as mine, I welcome any suggestions you might dare to make.  For I am, after all, quite magnanimous by nature.

Rocky Mountain High
John Denver
He was born in the summer
Of his twenty-seventh year
Coming home
To a place he'd never been before
Left yesterday behind him
You might say he was born again
Might say he found a key for every door
When he first came to the mountains
His life was far away
On the road
And hangin' by a song
But the string's already broken
And he doesn't really care
Keeps changin' fast
It don't last for long

The Colorado Rocky Mountain high
I've seen it rainin' fire in the sky
The shadow from the starlight
Is softer than a lullaby
Rocky Mountain high
In Colorado
Rocky Mountain high
High in Colorado

He climbed cathedral mountains
Saw silver clouds below
Saw everything as far as you can see
And they say that he got crazy once
And he tried to touch the sun
And he lost a friend
But kept the memory
Now he walks in quiet solitude
The forests and the streams
Seeking grace in every step he takes
His sight has turned inside himself
To try and understand
The serenity of a clear blue mountain lake

The Colorado Rocky Mountain high
I've seen it rainin' fire in the sky
You talk to God
And listen to the casual reply
Rocky Mountain high
High in Colorado
Rocky Mountain high
High in Colorado

Now his life is full of wonder
But his heart still knows some fear
Of a simple thing
He cannot comprehend
Why they try to
Tear the mountains down
To bring in a couple more
More people
More scars upon the land

And the Colorado Rocky Mountain high
I've seen it rainin' fire in the sky
He know he'd be a poorer man
If he never saw an eagle fly
Rocky Mountain high
Colorado Rocky Mountain high
I've seen it rainin' fire in the sky
Friends around the campfire
Everybody's high
High
High
Rocky Mountain high
High in Colorado
Rocky Mountain high
High in Colorado
Rocky Mountain high
High in Colorado
Rocky Mountain high
High in Colorado
Rocky Mountain high
High in Colorado
Rocky Mountain high
High in Colorado
Rocky Mountain high
High in Colorado

Rocky Mountain Way
Joe Walsh
Spent the last year
Rocky Mountain way
Couldn't get much higher
Out to pasture
Think it's safe to say
Time to open fire

And we don't need the ladies cryin'
'Cause the story's sad
'Cause the Rocky Mountain way
Is better than the way we had
Oh oh oh

Well
He's tellin' us this
And he's tellin' us that
Changes it every day
Says it doesn't matter
Bases are loaded
And Casey's at bat
Playin' it play by play
Time to change the batter

And we don't need the ladies cryin'
'Cause the story's sad
Aha
The Rocky Mountain way
Is better than the way we had
Hey hey hey

  1. John Denver had some beautiful melodies with wonderful lyrics....can't say I cared for his voice. The other, Joe Walsh, can't say I have heard of him...

    1. Regarding Joe Walsh, I would say that you really need to get out more, but since you are currently on such a long trek, I will keep quiet. (LOL?)

  2. I was a big fan of John Denver and was heartbroken when he died in a tragic plane crash. Such a huge talent.

    1. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Stephen!!! I really enjoyed his TV show, and it came as a shock to find out what a tyrant he was when the camera light was not on.

    1. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Ann!!! I can't say that I was a big fan of his music, but he scheduled to have at least one more as a singer and one as the writer in this series.

  4. Now you're talking/singing! I love John Denver...wonderful songwriter...a true poet and what a fabulous voice he had! He was probably my late brother Graham's favourite singer of all.

In 1994 Graham and I went to Denver's concert in Townsville, a city in north Queensland in which I was living and working in at the time. Denver was absolutely fantastic...and live, his voice was strong and yet as clear as the most melodious bell. It was a truly outstanding concert...and top the evening off, we got to meet and talk with Denver after the show. A fabulous night...and one I'll never forget and will cherish for ever. It was Denver's last visit to Aus...his tragic death was only 3 years later.

"Annie's Song" holds a special place in my heart...my late brother made me promise him I'd play the song in his memory (Graham's) after his passing. I fulfilled my promise to my brother.

I like Joe Walsh, too. I'm sure I've still got a couple of his LPs here packed away in cartons!

    1. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Lee!!! I am glad that you have such good memories of John Denver, and like I told Stephen, it came as a shock to me to read how awful he was in the production of his TV show. I suppose such just comes naturally far too often to the very talented.

    2. Sometimes I guess it depends if you're surrounded by turkeys or eagles! :)
