ATF: SoCal Dreams and Nightmares

This weekly series will include as many of my all-time favorite tunes as I can get my grubby little hands on (so to speak).  Now, each one included in each edition will have some connection with the other—albeit only as a figment of my imagination, but they will not be numbered.  For I just cannot bring myself to rate some higher than others.  So, this will not be a countdown, but if you are enjoying them as much as I do, it won’t matter.  Besides, with no countdown, this could go on forever and ever!  Oh, and despite the fact that there is absolutely no way that your musical tastes can be as exquisite as mine, I welcome any suggestions that you might dare to make.  I am, after all, quite magnanimous by nature.

California Dreamin’
The Mamas and The Papas
All the leaves are brown
All the leaves are brown
And the sky is grey
And the sky is grey
I've been for a walk
I've been for a walk
On a winter's day
On a winter's day
I'd be safe and warm
I'd be safe and warm
If I was in L.A.
If I was in L.A.
California dreamin'
California dreamin'
On such a winter's day

Stopped into a church
I passed along the way
Well I got down on my knees
Got down on my knees
And I pretend to pray
I pretend to pray
You know the preacher liked the cold
Preacher liked the cold
He knows I'm gonna stay
Knows I'm gonna stay
California dreamin'
California dreamin'
On such a winter's day

All the leaves are brown
All the leaves are brown
And the sky is grey
And the sky is grey
I've been for a walk
I've been for a walk
On a winter's day
On a winter's day
If I didn't tell her
If I didn't tell her
I could leave today
I could leave today
California dreamin'
California dreamin'
On such a winter's day
California dreamin'
On such a winter's day
California dreamin'
On such a winter's day

Hotel California
The Eagles
On a dark desert highway
Cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas
Risin’ up through the air
Up ahead in the distance
I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy
And my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night
There she stood in the doorway
I heard the mission bell
Then I was thinkin’ to myself
This could be Heaven
Or this could be Hell
Then she lit up a candle
And she showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor
I thought I heard them say

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely face
Plenty of room at the Hotel California
Any time of year
Any time of year
You can find it here

Her mind is Tiffany twisted
She got the Mercedes bends
She’s got a lot of pretty pretty boys
That she calls friends
How they dance in the courtyard
Sweet summer sweat
Some dance to remember
Some dance to forget
So I called up the captain
Please bring me my wine
He said
We haven't had that spirit here
Since 1969
And still those voices are callin’
From far away
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely face
They're living it up at the Hotel California
What a nice surprise
What a nice surprise
Bring your alibis

Mirrors on the ceilin’
The pink champagne on ice
And she said
We are all just prisoners here
Of our own device
And in the master's chambers
They gathered for the feast
They stab it with their steely knives
But they just can't kill the beast
Last thing I remember
I was
Runnin’ for the door
I had to find the passage back
To the place I was before
Relax
Said the night man
We are programmed to receive
You can check out any time you like
But you can never leave

  1. All good music. And what a smooth voice Mama Cass had. As did the wonderful Karen Carpenter. It'd be great to have a few singers around these days of their calibre.

I remember a mighty cartoon that you may have overlooked, Jerry..."Mighty Mouse"!!! :)

A relaxed happy Easter to you and Arlynda. :)

  2. I remember that song by the Mamas and the Papa quite well.
Back in the days of vinyl I had the Eagles album with hotel california. I can picture exactly what it looked like

  4. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Lee!!! All four members of The Mamas and The Papas could flat out sing. I had an old Mighty Mouse up last January, and I hope to have another one not too long from now. Thanks for the suggestion!

  5. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Ann!!! I don't remember if I first had an 8-track of Hotel California, but I definitely had a cassette of it later on (after I joined life in the fast lane).

  7. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Adullamite!!! Were you proclaiming your love for the group or chiding me for excessive wordiness again? Yeah, since The Mamas and The Papas are unmistakably American, your inner schoolmaster must have refused to remain silent once more. I would suggest seeking a therapy group, but we all know that you do not play well with others. (LOL?)

  8. It is such an honor to me to be included in your Friday link-up and I loved scrolling around your blog (first time visitor). You are an amazing collector of neat neat things to look at and listen to... thanks for all. Fun times; I will drop by often. (The Mamas and the Papas just made my day!)

  9. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Sallie!!! I am really glad you enjoyed this. Be assured that I actually have an ulterior motive to my Sites To See series, and it is to make new friends. I hope this is the beginning of a very good and long friendship with you, and I have just subscribed to your wonderful A Full-time Life through Feedly so that I can keep a better eye on what you are up to. (LOL?) Since I have been in very poor health for the last 21 years or so, I may prove to not be as good of a friend to you as you will be to me, though. Sigh.
