Come Monday...King James Held Court

“Come Monday…” is a weekly series that will involve a review of, or commentary about, websites, movies, documentaries, television shows, sports, music, and whatever else may tickle my fancy at the time. Be assured that these reviews will be generally positive, as in accordance to the Jimmy Buffett song “Come Monday.” This is subject to change, however. In fact, I would be most derelict in my duties to neglect going on a rant every once in a while. For rants promote change, and change can be good—right? Therefore, since good is generally considered as being a positive force in 99.3% of the parallel universes that I am aware of, even a rant could be considered as being something positive, and a genuine hissy-fit would be even better (so I’m told).

Just in case you are one of the 417 people on this planet at this time who do not know already, [King James] is in reference to [LeBron James], and last week he held court (in the form of a news conference on [ESPN]) to announce which [NBA] team he would be playing for the next few years.

According to [some reports], the news conference was viewed by almost 10 million viewers, and I am shocked that the number was that low. For you couldn’t have watched, nor listened, to a sports program for very long at all since even before the last season was over without hearing something about what he might do.

Okay, I must admit that I participated in the hoopla by watching the broadcast, and I was very disappointed when he announced that he was leaving the [Cleveland Cavaliers] to go play for the [Miami Heat]. For I am real big on loyalty, and with him being raised just 39 miles away in [Akron], I would think that he would not think of playing for anyone else.

No, it is not that I am a huge Cavaliers fan. In fact, I much prefer college basketball over the pro version of the game, but I do have somewhat of a personal stake in his decision. For during a particularly nasty [lake-effect snowstorm] back in the winter of ’87, some people just south of Cleveland adopted me while I couldn’t go anywhere, and I am for whoever they cheer for. That is, except for when my [Cowboys] play their [Browns], of course. The same applies when my [Cardinals] play their [Indians], and when my [Razorbacks] play their [Buckeyes], as well. Other than that, I am right in there with them all the way!

In all fairness, it would seem that the owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers, [Dan Gilbert], was not right in there all the way with LeBron—[Jesse Jackson’s remarks] notwithstanding. For LeBron had made it quite clear that he wanted to play where he could win NBA championships, and the indications were that he considered playing with [Dwyane Wade] and [Chris Bosh] as being critical to any future success, which was taken seriously by the ownership of the Miami Heat, who signed both players the day before King James held court.

No, this was really not about money. For LeBron [reportedly signed for substantially less] to play for Miami than he was offered to play for other teams—including Cleveland.

So, what do you think about it? If you are a fanatical fan of a NBA team other than the Miami Heat, please keep your remarks civil.

  1. I'm not a fanatical fan of any sport. I am surprised that his decision was based on something other than money. That's very rare these days.

  2. Yes, I can see where a game like basketball would be so utterly boring to someone like you, my dear Adullamite. After all, it took over 116 minutes for anyone to score in this years World Cup final, and it is being considered one of the most exciting soccer matches ever played. Thanks for stopping by again!!!

  3. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Ann!!! Well, when one already has more money than what you or I could spend in a dozen lifetimes, it is made somewhat easier to pursue other goals, but I do not mean that to sound as disparaging as it probably does.

  4. Love your 'Come Monday' Theme. As a Parrot Head myself, I shall look forward to Monday's.

I watched a LaBron interview with Larry King, way pre announcement. He seems to be the 'genuine article'

    PLU!

  5. Thanks for stopping by again, my dear Don!!! Yes, my wife and I have always been very impressed with the way he has conducted himself with great dignity in the midst of a circus gone wild. I just feel for the people of Cleveland, and I am perfectly willing to believe that the reason why he signed to play elsewhere is all on Dan Gilbert.

  7. I'm not a fan - far from it - but I think it was horrible of him to embarrass the city the way he did on national television.

He may be saying it's not about the money - sure, the contract he just signed may be lower than what he could get elsewhere, but what most people forget is that if he wins a championship in the next few years, his commending price jumps even more - not to mention endorsement deals through the roof. So no matter what he says, yes, it's about the money too.

  10. Thanks for stopping by again, my dear Storm!!! Yes, the way it was done does bother me a great deal. For just a press release would've sufficed, but even if done that way, the city of Cleveland would've still suffered.

  11. Thanks for stopping by again, my dear Sandie!!! All in all, you didn't miss much. Of course, if he had of signed with the Atlanta Hawks, your area might have seen some significant economic growth. On the other hand, they didn't seem to ever be in the running.
