Gerry Rafferty vs. Andy Gibb

NOTE: The way it is usually done here is to present two versions of the same song, or match a song with a parody of it.  I was all set to do this again, but the Foo Fighters’ version of the Gerry Rafferty classic, Baker Street, is quite simply awful.  So, after wrestling with it for a lot longer than I probably should have, it was suggested that I could help right a horrific wrong by placing Baker Street ahead of Andy Gibb’s Shadow Dancing, which is where it truly belongs instead of having to settle for number two on the U.S. Hot 100 back in 1978 on account of far too many teeny-boppers shadow dancing when they should have been in the kitchen learning how to be a proper wife.  (Yes, that last part was meant as a joke.  Kinda.)

Baker Street
Gerry Rafferty
Windin’ your way down
On Baker Street
Light in your head
And dead on your feet
Well another crazy day
You'll drink the night away
And forget about everything
This city desert
Makes you feel so cold
It's got so many people
But it's got no soul
And it's taken you so long
To find out you were wrong
When you thought it held everything

You used to think
That it was so easy
You used to say
That it was so easy
But you're tryin'
You're tryin' now
Another year
And then you'd be happy
Just one more year
And then you'd be happy
But you're cryin'
You're cryin' now

Way down the street
There's a lad in his place
He opens the door
He's got that look on his face
And he asks you where you've been
You tell him who you've seen
And you talk about anything
He's got this dream
About buyin' some land
He's gonna give up the booze
And the one night stands
And then he'll settle down
In some quiet little town
And forget about everything

But you know he'll always
Keep movin'
You know he's never gonna
Stop movin'
‘Cause he's rollin'
He's the rollin' stone
And when you wake up
It's a new mornin’
The sun is shinin’
It's a new mornin’
And you're goin’
You're goin’ home

Shadow Dancing
Andy Gibb
You got me lookin’ at that
Heaven in your eyes
I was chasin’ your direction
I was tellin’ you no lies
And I was lovin’ you
When the words are said
Baby I lose my head
And in a world of people
There's only you and I
There ain't nothin’ come between us
In the end
How can I hold you
When you ain't even mine
Only you can see me through
I leave it up to you

Do it light
Takin’ me through the night
Shadow dancin’
Baby you do it right
Huh huh
Give me more
Drag me across the floor
Shadow dancin’
All this and nothin’ more

All that I need is just
One moment in your arms
I was chasin’ your affection
I was doin’ you no harm
And I was lovin’ you
Make it shine
Make it rain
Baby I know my way
I need that sweet sensation
Of livin’ in your love
I can't breath when you're away
It pulls me down
You are the question
And the answer am I
Only you can see me through
I leave it up to you

Do it light
Takin’ me through the night
Shadow dancin’
Baby you do it right
Huh huh
Give me more
Drag me across the floor
Shadow dancin’
All this and nothin’ more

And in this world of people
There's only you and I
There ain't nothin’ come between us
In the end
Ah, how can I hold you
When you ain't even mine
Only you can see me through
I leave it up to you

Do it light
Takin’ me through the night
Shadow dancin’
Baby you do it right
Huh huh
Give me more
Drag me across the floor
Shadow dancin’
All this and nothin’ more

Do it light
Takin’ me through the night
Shadow dancin’
Baby you do it right
Huh huh
Give me more
Drag me across the floor
Shadow dancin’
All this and nothin’ more

  1. I didn't recognize the title of the song (Baker Street) but I knew the song as soon as the music came on - good dance tune! As for Andy Gibb - he was very cute but I was never much a fan of that style of singing...

On the up-side the first song was a goodie and the second song wasn't totally obnoxious so I guess it's sort of win-win selection.

And Andy Gibb was really cute...

  2. I'm going to have to go with Gerry Rafferty on this one. I will agree with Grace though that Andy Gibb gets a vote for being cute :)

  3. Thanks for stopping by again, my dear Grace!!! I admit that I like quite a few of The Brothers Gibb's songs, but Shadow Dancing most definitely isn't one of them.

  4. Thanks for stopping by again, my dear Ann!!! It is so sad that he met with such a tragic end.
