Come Monday...Smokin' Joe Lee Smith

“Come Monday…” is a weekly series that will involve a review of, or commentary about,  websites, movies, documentaries, television shows, sports, music, and whatever else may tickle my fancy at the time.  Be assured that these reviews will be generally positive, as in accordance to the Jimmy Buffett song “Come Monday.”  This is subject to change, however.  In fact, I would be most derelict in my duties to neglect going on a rant every once in a while.  For rants promote change, and change can be good—right?  Therefore, since good is generally considered as being a positive force in 99.3% of the parallel universes that I am aware of, even a rant could be considered as being something positive, and a genuine hissy-fit would be even better (so I’m told).

A few months back, [Chicken-Haulin’] was found by a soon-to-be very dear friend, [Vic].  After exchanging a few pleasantries, he asked me if I had ever heard of [Smokin’ Joe Lee Smith], which I hadn’t.

In the profile on his website, it says that Smokin’ Joe is not a musician who decided to make an album about big truckin’.  Be assured that anyone who has really done some chicken-haulin’ didn’t need to be told that he was actually a chicken-hauler, who happened to also be a very talented musician, after listening to a few bars of one of his songs.

The following is a song that took me back to when I was livin’ the life that has to be experienced first-hand to be truly understood.  Although, it (along with the rest of his songs) should give you a good idea of what chicken-haulin’ is all about.

P.S.: This song really rocks!!!

Reefer Madness
Smokin’ Joe Lee Smith
Reefer Madness was an outlaw trucker
Jammin' gears on the boulevard
You know he always kept the hammer down
I said damn
But the boy runs hard
A large car Pete
He kept it washed and neat
And it was pushed by a V8 Cat
You try to pass him on the big road
He'd blow your doors off
Just like that

Reefer Madness loved the road
He loved to hear his engine purr
He loved to feel them big wheels roll
An outlaw garbage hauler
He was always pushed for time
So he lived his life
Doin' 85
Burnin' up the highway lines

Hammer down for months on end
Our little hero was just worn out
With that cheap-ass freight
And high payments to make
He had to drag those white lines out
Killin' hisself
Just trying to survive
‘Til one day on a rain slick ridge
Asleep at the wheel
Coming off of a hill
Reefer Madness missed the bridge

Reefer Madness loved the road
He loved to hear his engine purr
He loved to feel them big wheels roll
An outlaw garbage hauler
He was always pushed for time
So he lived his life
Doin' 85
Burnin' up the highway lines

Reefer Madness loved the road
He loved to hear his engine purr
He loved to feel them big wheels roll
An outlaw garbage hauler
He was always pushed for time
So he lived his life
Doin' 85
Burnin' up the highway lines

  1. Thanks for stopping by again, my dear Gorges!!! I never had an opportunity to drive a show truck, and I don't think I would have wanted to. For I would have been worried about getting a scratch on it, which can happen just going down the road.

On a related note, I did get to drive a truck with only around 14,000 miles on it when I first got it, which is practically brand-new. It was the truck I called my purple rocketship in The Crackerhead Chronicles, and it didn't have a scratch or a dent anywhere. Yep, on one of the first trips I took with it, a drunk driver sideswiped the driver's side front fender on the Clovis, NM side of Bovina, TX.

  6. Thanks for stopping by again, my dear Nezzy!!! Well, by the time it was all over with, I had hauled every kind of trailer but a full-sized tanker. It didn't take me long to realize that I was too lazy for flatbeds. Anyway, I am really glad you like his music!

  11. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Anonymous!!! I am sorry to hear it, but thank you for informing me about Somkin' Joe. I was very disappointed in that he never got in contact with me, and I have been tempted with taking down the ad on account of it. I will, however, keep it up for a while longer in the hope that it might help sell a few of his CDs for the benefit of his surviving family.
