Because The Night
Patti Smith

Take me now baby
Here as I am
Pull me close
Try and understand
Desire is hunger
Is the fire I breathe
Love is a banquet
On which we feed

Come on now
Try and understand
The way I feel
When I’m in your hands
Take my hand
Come undercover
They can’t hurt you now
Can’t hurt you now
Can’t hurt you now

Because the night
Belongs to lovers
Because the night
Belongs to lust
Because the night
Belongs to lovers
Because the night
Belongs to us

Have I doubt
When I’m alone
Love is a ring
The telephone
Love is an angel
Disguised as lust
Here in our bed
Until the morning comes

Come on now
Try and understand
The way I feel
Under your command
Take my hand
As the sun descends
They can’t touch you now
Can’t touch you now
Can’t touch you now

Because the night
Belongs to lovers
Because the night
Belongs to lust
Because the night
Belongs to lovers
Because the night
Belongs to us

With love
We sleep
With doubt
The vicious circle
Turn and burns
Without you
I cannot live
Forgive
The yearning burning
I believe it’s time
Too real to feel
So touch me now
Touch me now
Touch me now

Because the night
Belongs to lovers
Because the night
Belongs to lust
Because the night
Belongs to lovers
Because the night
Belongs to us

Because tonight
There are two lovers
If we believe
In the night we trust
Because tonight
Belongs to lovers
Because the night
Belongs to lust
Because the night
Belongs to lovers
Because the night
Belongs to us

  1. I love this song, I have its version by 10.000 maniacs in my ipod and can't stop listening to it. Thanks for posting the lyrics!

  2. Thanks for stopping by again, my dear Fullet!!! This is one of my all-time favorite songs, as well. If I remember right, it was originally written by Bruce Springsteen, and Patti helped fine-tune it some. Then she recorded it first, and 10,000 Maniacs came after that. Bruce recorded it some time later, but I don't know exactly when.

  4. Thanks for stopping by again, my dear Ann!!! I really do love her version of this song, but this is the only song of her's that I am aware of that I can stand to listen to for more than a few seconds. Be assured, I have tried several.

  6. Oh, I was hoping that you were going to post this one as you did some of her other songs recently. I love this song and remember when it came out...fabulous. I'm not sure if I purchased the single as my aunt who I practically lived with owned it, so I played her's (we are only 10 years apart). I love that you added the background.

Springsteen and Patti were in adjacent studios with the same producer who showed Patti the song and they collaborated. Springsteen never released it on his album, but did sing in during his concerts. He used the original lyrics. The song charted in 1978.

I too share your feeling that this one of her few songs that I can listen to.

  8. Thanks for stopping by again, my dear Coleen!!! I am really glad you liked this song, but it was actually Patty Smyth (with the y's)--not Patti Smith (with the i's) that I just posted some of her songs. Maybe it's just me, but I am fascinated by the similarities of the different spellings of their names. As far as I'm concerned, Patty Smyth (with the y's) has it hands down over Patti Smith (with the i's) in all categories (voice, songs, physical attractiveness), but I truly love this particular song.

Yes, you are right I did get the two confused...Just as I did back then...at least I'm consistent. :-)

  13. Be assured that you are not alone in that, my dear Coleen. In fact, I always thought it was Patty Smyth who sung this song. Thanks for stopping by again!!!
