ATF: Crash Courses

This series will include as many of my all-time favorite (ATF) tunes as I can get my grubby little hands on (so to speak).  Now, each one included in each edition will have some connection with the other—albeit only as a figment of my imagination, but they will not be numbered.  For I just cannot bring myself to rate some higher than others.  So, this will not be a countdown, but if you are enjoying them as much as I do, it won’t matter.  Besides, with no countdown, this could go on forever and ever!  Oh, and despite the fact that there is absolutely no way your musical tastes could be as exquisite as mine, I welcome any suggestions you might dare to make.  For I am, after all, quite magnanimous by nature.

Learning to Fly
Pink Floyd
Into the distance
A ribbon of black
Stretched to the point
Of no turning back
A flight of fancy
On a windswept field
Standing alone
My senses reeled
Fatal attraction
Is holding me fast
How can I escape
This irresistible grasp

Can't keep my eyes
From the circling sky
Tongue-tied
And twisted
Just an earth-bound misfit
I

Ice is forming
On the tips of my wings
Unheeded warnings
I thought I thought of everything
No navigator
To find my way home
Unladened
Empty
And turned to stone

The soul intention
Is learning to fly
Condition grounded
But determined to try
God keep my eyes
From the circling sky
Tongue-tied
And twisted
Just an earth-bound misfit
I

129.4, it's to go.

3-8-Echo.
Easy on the brakes. Take it easy. It’s gonna roll this time.
Just hand the power gradually, and it...

Above the planet
On a wing and a prayer
My grubby halo
A vapor trail in the empty air
Across the clouds
I see my shadow fly
Out of the corner
Of my watering eye
To dream unthreatened
By the morning light
Could blow this soul right through
The roof of the night

There's no sensation
To compare with this
Suspended animation
A state of bliss
Can't keep my mind
From the circling sky
Tongue-tied
And twisted
Just an earth-bound misfit
I

Learn to Fly
Foo Fighters
Run and tell all of the angels
This could take all night
Think I need a devil to help me
Get things right
Hook me up a new revolution
‘Cause this one is a lie
We sat around laughin’
And watched the last one die

Now I'm lookin’ to the sky to save me
Lookin’ for a sign of life
Lookin’ for somethin’ to help me
Burn out bright
I'm lookin’ for a complication
Lookin’ ‘cause I'm tired of lyin’
Make my way back home
When I learn to fly high

I think I'm done nursin’ patience
It can wait one night
I'd give it all away
If you give me one last try
We'll live happily ever trapped
If you just save my life
Run and tell the angels
That everything's alright

I'm lookin’ to the sky to save me
Lookin’ for a sign of life
Lookin’ for somethin’ to help me
Burn out bright
I'm lookin’ for a complication
Lookin’ ‘cause I'm tired of tryin’
Make my way back home
When I learn to fly high
Make my way back home
When I learn to

Fly along with me
I can't quite make it alone
Try to make this life my own
And fly along with me
I can't quite make it alone
Try to make this life my own

I'm lookin’ to the sky to save me
Lookin’ for a sign of life
Lookin’ for somethin’ to help me
Burn out bright
I'm lookin’ for a complication
Lookin’ ‘cause I'm tired of tryin’
Make my way back home
When I learn to
I'm lookin’ to the sky to save me
Lookin’ for a sign of life
Lookin’ for somethin’ to help me
Burn out bright
I'm lookin’ for a complication
Lookin’ ‘cause I'm tired of tryin’
Make my way back home
When I learn to fly high
Make my way back home
When I learn to fly
Make my way back home
When I learn to

  1. 'Learning to fly', and the album, what was it 'temporary loss of reason'? is one of my favourites!

    Foo Fighters, yip, talent!!!

    1. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Shadow!!! Alas, I am not nearly as much of a Pink Floyd fan as I should be, but I dearly cherish a few of their songs. Did you get that all of the parts in that Foo Fighters video were played by members of the band--except for the ornery maintenance men, who were played by Jack Black and Kyle Gass (a.k.a. Tenacious D)?

    2. ...okay, I picked up a few, not all, lemme press 'play' again and pay attention this time?! *grin*

    3. Thanks for stopping by again, my dear Shadow!!! Just don't watch it too many times in a row. For seeing Dave Grohl giving himself an autograph or serving himself coffee might cause a rupture in subspace. (LOL?)

  2. The music would benefit by not having the crap videos along with it.

    1. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Adullamite!!! Yeah, I suppose anything without Benny Hill would not be worth watching to you. Sorry.

  3. Never got into either of these groups. But I know people who rank them very highly.

    1. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Stephen!!! For some stupid reason, I have Pink Floyd and The Moody Blues attached at the hip in my mind, and I am a much bigger fan of The Moody Blues. As for Foo Fighters, be assured that there are only 2-3 of their songs songs I like, and the one here will be the only one included in this series.

  4. Now I have the feeling I should try flying! Will you catch me when I surely fall flat on my face! Yikes!

    1. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Karen!!! Be assured that I am not afraid of falling, but the thought of that very sudden stop at the end of a fall bothers me a great deal.

  5. Now you're talking! I love Floyd. Pretty partial to David Grohl, too. Did you see his 8-part documentary "Foo Fighters - Sonic Highway"?

    1. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Lee!!! No, I haven't seen his documentary. I knew that he was the drummer for Nirvana before Cobain decided to put an end to the group. Being so skillful with more than one major instrument absolutely amazes me.

    2. Keep your eye out for it, Jerry. It's excellent. Grohl made it as a promotion of their new album "Sonic Highway"...the eight episodes have just finished a rerun here. He filmed through eight cities of music fame throughout the US...a brilliant expose'; including some great history and musos. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3893538/

    3. Thanks for stopping by again, my dear Lee!!! I will see about it when I can. I have been seeing the headlines on the recent horror in Cairns. I sure hope this has not made things worse for Carol.

  6. Pink Floyd wasn't one of my favorites back in the day. I never listened to much of them

    1. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Ann!!! I was the same way, but I tried to make up for it by listening to The Wall almost non-stop for hours upon upon hours. Oh yeah, it is scheduled to be included in this series later on.

  7. What has transpired in Cairns is so very distressing. It's a terrible, terrible tragedy. So very sad...it's hard for us all to get our heads around it, I think. Hearts are heavy; the mood is sombre.

    1. Thanks for stopping by again, my dear Lee!!! The latest I saw was that the police are now looking at the mother as being the culprit, which I find even more disturbing. Although, I am all too painfully aware of the pressures that can lead to such a tragedy.

  8. Yes, the mother has been charged. Seven of the children were hers...and one was a niece. The kiddies were aged between around 15 years down to 18 months. She, the mother was an Islander...from the Torres Strait Islands (which lie between the tip of far north Queensland and Papua New Guinea). Islanders are pretty religious and are very happy people, with very close family and friendship ties that extend wide and far... but the burden of life, in the woman's situation, has obviously won in this case. Nobody knows much at this point...nobody seems to have noticed that anything was amiss within the family/household.

It's such a very, very sad thing to have happened...beyond comprehension...heartbreaking.

  9. The Foo Fighters song is one of my very favorites. And I quote it often when frazzled and "looking for the sky to save me."

  10. Pink Floyd... much bigger influence on me than the Foo Fighters, and in my opinion, a much better band and overall music catalogue... but I'm sure I'm biased based on my age!

    1. Thanks for stopping by, my dear SPP!!! Yes, considering the fact that they have been recording for probably longer than the members of Foo Fighters have been alive, I would have to agree that Pink Floyd has been a much more influential band on a number of counts. (LOL?)
