This series will include as many of my all-time
favorite (ATF) tunes as I can get my grubby little hands on (so to speak). Now, each one included in each edition will
have some connection with the other—albeit only as a figment of my imagination,
but they will not be numbered. For I
just cannot bring myself to rate some higher than others. So, this will not be a countdown, but if you
are enjoying them as much as I do, it won’t matter. Besides, with no countdown, this could go on
forever and ever! Oh, and despite the
fact that there is absolutely no way your musical tastes could be as exquisite
as mine, I welcome any suggestions you might dare to make. For I am, after all, quite magnanimous by
nature.

I’m Just a Singer in a Rock and Roll Band
The Moody Blues
I'm just a-wandering on the face of this earth
Meeting so many people
Who are trying to be free
And while I'm traveling I hear so many words
Language barriers broken
Now we've found the key
And if you want the wind of change
To blow about you
And you're the only other person to know
Don't tell me
I'm just a singer in a rock and roll band
A thousand pictures can be drawn from one word
Only who is the artist
We got to agree
A thousand miles can lead so many ways
Just to know who is driving
What a help it would be
So if you want this world of yours
To turn about you
And you can see exactly what to do
Please tell me
I'm just a singer in a rock and roll band
How can we understand
Riots by the people
For the people
Who are only
Destroying
Themselves
And when you see a frightened person
Who is frightened by the people
Who are
Scorching
Scorching
This earth
Scorching
Scorching
This earth
I'm just a-wandering on the face of this earth
Meeting so many people
Who are trying to be free
And while I'm traveling I hear so many words
Language barriers broken
Now we've found the key
And if you want the wind of change
To blow about you
And you're the only other person to know
Don't tell me
I'm just a singer in a rock and roll band
I’m just a singer in a rock and roll band
How can we understand
Riots by the people
For the people
Who are only
Destroying
Themselves
And when you see a frightened person
Who is frightened by the people
Who are
Scorching
Scorching
This earth
Scorching
Scorching
This earth
Music is the traveler
Crossing our world
Meeting so many people
Bridging the seas
I'm just a singer in a rock and roll band
I’m just a singer in a rock and roll band
Music is the traveler
Crossing our world
Meeting so many people
Bridging the seas
I’m just the singer in a rock and roll band
We're just the singers in a rock and roll band

We Are an American Band
Grand Funk Railroad
Out on the road
For forty days
Last night in Little Rock
Put me in a haze
Sweet sweet Connie
A-doin’ her act
She had the whole show
And that’s a natural fact
Up all night
With Freddy King
I got to you
Poker’s his thing
A-boozin’ ladies
Keep me right
As long as we can make it
To the show tonight
We’re an American band
We’re an American band
We’re comin' to your town
We’ll help you party it down
We’re an American band
Four young chiquitas
In Omaha
Was waitin’ for the band
To return from the show
Feelin’ good
Feelin’ right
It’s Saturday night
The hotel detective
He was outta sight
Now these fine ladies
They had a plan
They were out to meet
The boys in the band
They said
Come on dudes
Let’s get it on
And we proceeded to tear
That hotel down
We’re an American band
We’re an American band
We’re comin' to your town
We’ll help you party it down
We’re an American band
Yeah
We’re an American band
Yeah
We’re an American band
We’re comin' to your town
We’ll help you party it down
We’re an American band
Yeah yeah yeah yeah
We’re an American band
We’re an American band
We’re comin' to your town
We’ll help you party it down
We’re an American band
Hey hey hey hey
We’re an American band
We’re an American band
We’re comin' to your town
We’ll help you party it down
We’re an American band
We’re an American band
Ooh ooh
We’re an American band
Ooh ooh
We’re an American band
Ooh ooh

I saw Grand Funk Railroad live at Hyde Park in the days of long ago. They were appalling! Put up as a 'Supergroup' as the US version of 'Cream' they were rubbish! My mate was desperately trying to enjoy them and failing and the crowd was not that impressed, however those stoned at the front enjoyed it! This track is one of the better ones and it goes nowhere!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by, my dear Adullamite!!! As I have told you before, I am truly sorry that not all musical groups can perform up to the standards set by The Sex Pistols.
DeleteThe second song I know very well. I'm surprised I don't remember the first one though. Wade is a huge Moody Blues fan so you would have though I would have heard it
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by, my dear Ann!!! I probably first heard it on the radio, but what I remember the most is listening to it on their Seventh Sojourn album, which came out in 1972. Be assured that I just about wore it out from playing it so much.
DeleteNow, then, there, here and now..."The Moody Blues"...wonderful, wonderful band. Loved them and still do; and I still have their LPs in my collection of music. Great music.
ReplyDeleteI have nothing of Grand Funk Railroad, though.
Thanks for stopping by, my dear Lee!!! I have no idea where my Moody Blues Seventh Sojourn album is now. Sigh.
DeleteNot my piece of cake the last one Don't know them either but the Moody Blues are great. My favourite song "Night in white Satin" !!
ReplyDeleteHope you are having a good last few days of this year
Thanks for stopping by, my dear Marja!!! Be assured that Nights in White Satin is scheduled to be included in this series later on.
DeleteQuite often, when I tell people that I was the lead singer in several rock bands in the late 1970s and early 1980s, I'm asked if it was because I liked the Moody Blues song. Hardly, although I always liked it.
ReplyDelete"We're an American Band" was the first rock'n'roll song I ever played in front of an audience.
Thanks for stopping by, my dear Silver Fox!!! I wish I could have heard you perform. Hey, with enough beer in me, you might still sound great--huh?
DeleteThere was a time when I couldn't get enough of the Moody Blues. I wonder what happened to my albums.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by, my dear Stephen!!! They might be in Albuquerque? That's where a bunch of mine went after I left them with a friend in Amarillo for safekeeping while I was out with a harvest crew during the summer/fall of '86.
DeleteJust went to my music collection - checked out GFR and I still have a number of their songs; how about Mean Mistreater or Closer to Home (my favorite). And so many great tunes from the Moody Blues - how about Tuesday Afternoon, Isn't Life Strange, For My Lady, Question .....
ReplyDeleteTough day today; very quiet in the house now without Sasha. I too believe we will see her in heaven, along with our (late) Teddy, Sandy, Misty .... Thanks for your kind words Jerry, and Happy New Year.
Thanks for stopping by, my dear Rick!!! GFR's Some Kind of Wonderful is already on the list, and I will have to give the ones you suggested a good listen (again). Be assured that Tuesday Afternoon, Isn't Life Strange and several others from The Moody Blues are on the list.
DeleteBe also assured that I feel your pain over Sasha. For we lost our darling Obie in May of 2013, and then we lost our sweet, sweet Stuart last May. Yeah, we will be keeping a closer than usual eyeball or four upon Trixie and Grayson this May!
Dear Jerry, Two great groups with such distinct sounds. Good choices.
ReplyDeleteHave a very happy and blessed New Year my friend. Catherine
Thanks for stopping by, my dear Catherine!!! I am glad that your enjoyed them, and I am so happy over being able to leave comments on your site again.
DeleteI simply LOVE 'American Band' and the Moody Blues.... a classic!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by, my dear Shadow!!! Have you covered We're An American Band on your drums?
DeleteSome great choice, Jerry, great memories here, too.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by, my dear Linda!!! I am really glad you enjoyed this.
