This weekly series will include as many of my all-time
favorite (ATF) tunes as I can get my grubby little hands on (so to speak). Now, each one included in each edition will
have some connection with the other—albeit only as a figment of my imagination,
but they will not be numbered. For I
just cannot bring myself to rate some higher than others. So, this will not be a countdown, but if you
are enjoying them as much as I do, it won’t matter. Besides, with no countdown, this could go on
forever and ever! Oh, and despite the
fact that there is absolutely no way that your musical tastes can be as
exquisite as mine, I welcome any suggestions you might dare to make. For I am, after all, quite magnanimous by
nature.

Set Fire to the Rain
Adele
I let it fall
My heart
And as it fell
You rose to claim it
It was dark
And I was over
Until you kissed my lips
And you saved me
My hands
They're strong
But my knees
Were far too weak
To stand
In your arms
Without fallin’
To your feet
But there's a side to you
That I never knew
Never knew
All the things you'd say
They were never true
Never true
And the games you play
You would always win
Always win
But I set fire
To the rain
Watched it pour
As I touched your face
Let it burn
While I cry
'Cause I heard it screamin’
Out your name
Your name
When layin’
With you
I could stay there
Close my eyes
Feel you here
Forever
You and me together
Nothing is better
'But there's a side to you
That I never knew
Never knew
All the things you'd say
They were never true
Never true
And the games you'd play
You would always win
Always win
But I set fire
To the rain
Watched it pour
As I touched your face
Let it burn
While I cried
'Cause I heard it screamin’
Out your name
Your name
I set fire
To the rain
And I threw us
Into the flames
Where we felt
Somethin' die
‘Cause I knew that
That was the last time
The last time
Sometimes
I wake up by the door
Now that you've gone
Must be waitin’ for you
Even now
When it's already over
I can't help myself
From lookin’ for you
I set fire
To the rain
Watched it pour
As I touched your face
Let it burn
While I cried
'Cause I heard it screamin’
Out your name
Your name
I set fire
To the rain
And I threw us
Into the flames
Where we felt
Somethin' die
'Cause I knew that
That was the last time
The last time
Oh
Oh oh
Oh no
Let it burn
Oh
Oh oh
Oh
Let it burn
Let it burn

Fire and Rain
James Taylor
Just yesterday mornin’
They let me know you were gone
Suzanne
The plans they made
Put an end to you
I walked out this mornin’
And I wrote down this song
I just can't remember who to send it to
I've seen fire
And I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days
That I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times
When I could not find a friend
But I always thought
That I'd see you again
Won't you look down upon me Jesus
You've got to help me make a stand
You've just got to see me through
Another day
My body's achin’
And my time is at hand
And I won't make it
Any other way
I've seen fire
And I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days
That I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times
When I could not find a friend
But I always thought
That I'd see you again
Been walkin’ my mind
To an easy time
With my back turned towards the sun
Lord knows when the cold wind blows
It'll turn your head around
Well there's hours of time
On the telephone line
To talk about things to come
Sweet dreams
And flyin’ machines
In pieces on the ground
Oh
I've seen fire
And I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days
That I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times
When I could not find a friend
But I always thought
That I'd see you baby
One more time again
Now
Thought I'd see you
One more time again
There's just a few things comin’ my way
This time around
Now
Thought I'd see you
Thought I'd see you
Fire and rain
Now now now now now now now now

Would you look at those lyrics. They actually mean something. Not like the stuff they write nowadays...
ReplyDeleteI always liked that James Taylor song
ReplyDeleteThanks For stopping by, my dear Shadow!!! Yeah, maybe a little too real--huh? That is, at least for those of us who have been scalded.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by, my dear Ann!!! I always loved the melody to Fire and Rain, but it took a while before I could really listen to the lyrics without shedding a few tears after discovering what setting fire to the rain really feels like.
ReplyDeleteAdele is certainly one of the more talented singers around. As for James Taylor; he's a treasure. We saw him perform last year with Carol King and they were fabulous.
ReplyDeleteRemember seeing James Taylor in 1977--it was my first 'rock' concert. Thanks for the memories.
ReplyDeleteYou've been very prolific this week, Jerry...I'm flat out keeping up!
ReplyDeleteI've a few things on my plate and have been shuffling them around from one side to the other...eventually I'll get through them!
Thanks for the melodies. :)
Thanks for stopping by, my dear Stephen!!! As I keep getting older and older, I have become more and more appreciative of old geezers still doing their thing. (LOL?)
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by, my dear Desert Rocker!!! It was a couple of years after that (I think) when my first wife and I went to see Alabama at the old Barnhill Arena on the main University of Arkansas campus in Fayetteville. This is only true concert I have ever been to. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by, my dear Lee!!! Alas, there are times when it feels like someone has set fire to my rear. (LOL?)
ReplyDeleteAdele - powerful and emotional. And that's my all-time favorite James Taylor song - thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by, my dear Rick!!! I plan on having one more Adele song (yeah, that's the one) and several more of Taylor's in this series. I really appreciated you mentioning in another comment that you had 500+ all-time favorites of your own. For I was feeling like I might be kinda weird.for having so many. By the way, my definition of an all-time favorite is a song that I could listen to over and over again without getting tired of it.
