A Sunday Drive

Back during my childhood, our parents would often load up my brother and me after Sunday morning church services for a leisurely drive around where we lived.  Even though we were seeing mostly familiar sights, it was still good to see them, and this is why “A Sunday Drive” sounded about right for the name of a weekly series revisiting familiar sites that are well worth seeing again and again.  The link below the image is to the site itself, and the image is linked to the post it was first included in here.

ESPN Additions

Ironically, some of the best television commercials are for ESPN, and only air on ESPN.  Now, I do not know if these ads really are meant to add all the more to the viewing experience, but it works for me.

Sites To See

The SOLE purpose of this weekly series is to help call attention to sites that I think many would find most interesting—in one way or another.  Just to be clear, inclusion in this series is not necessarily meant as a recommendation, and I have included sites that are rather disturbing to me.  The link below each image is to the site itself, and each image is linked to the particular post from which it was taken when applicable.  Please, go see for yourself.  Oh, and as of August 10, 2012, I will be no longer including sites that have auto-play and word verification engaged.

ATF: Seeking Shelter

This weekly series will include as many of my all-time favorite tunes as I can get my grubby little hands on (so to speak).  Now, each one included in each edition will have some connection with the other—albeit only as a figment of my imagination, but they will not be numbered.  For I just cannot bring myself to rate some higher than others.  So, this will not be a countdown, but if you are enjoying them as much as I do, it won’t matter.  Besides, with no countdown, this could go on forever and ever!  Oh, and despite the fact that there is absolutely no way that your musical tastes can be as exquisite as mine, I welcome any suggestions that you might dare to make.  I am, after all, quite magnanimous by nature.

Gimme Shelter
The Rolling Stones
Oooh
A storm is threatenin’
My very life today
If I don't
Get some shelter
Ooh yeah
I'm gonna fade away

War
Children
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
War
Children
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
Hey
Yeah

Oooh
See the fire is sweepin'
At our streets today
Burnin' like a red coal carpet
A mad bull’s
Lost its way

War
Children
Yeah
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
War
Children
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
Hey yeah

Yeah

Rape
Murder
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
Rape
Murder
Yeah
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
Rape
Murder
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
Yeah
Yeah
Yeah
Yeah

Mmmm
A storm is threatening
My very life today
Gimme
Gimme shelter
Or I'm gonna fade away

War
Children
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away

I tell you
Love
Sister
It's just a kiss away
It's just a kiss away
It's just a kiss away
It's just a kiss away
It's just a kiss away
Kiss away
Kiss away
Yeah

Against The Wind
Bob Seger
Seems like yesterday
But it was long ago
Janey was lovely
She was the queen of my nights
There in darkness
With the radio
Playin’ low
And the secrets that we shared
The mountains that we moved
Caught like a wildfire out of control
“Til there was nothin’ left to burn
And nothin’ left to prove
And I remember what she said to me
How she swore that it never would end
I remember how she held me oh so tight
Wish I didn't know now
What I didn't know then

Against the wind
We were runnin’ against the wind
We were young and strong
But just runnin’
Against the wind

And the years rolled slowly past
And I found myself alone
Surrounded by strangers I thought were my friends
Found myself further
And further from my home
And I
Guess I lost my way
There were oh so many roads
I was livin’ to run
And runnin’ to live
Never worried about payin’
Or even how much I owe
Movin' eight miles a minute
And for months at a time
Breakin’ all of the rules that I could bend
I began to find myself searchin’
Searchin’ for shelter
Again and again

Against the wind
Little somethin’ against the wind
I found myself seekin’ shelter
Against the wind

Well those drifter’s days are past me now
I've got so much more to think about
Deadlines
And commitments
What to leave in
What to leave out

Against the wind
I'm still runnin’ against the wind
I'm older now
But still runnin’
Against the wind
Well I'm older now
But still runnin’
Against the wind
Against the wind
Against the wind
I’m still runnin’
Against the wind
I’m still runnin’ against the wind
Against the wind
Watch the young man runnin’
Against the wind
Watch the young man run
Against the wind
Watch the young man runnin’
Against the wind
I’ve been runnin’ against the wind
Against the wind
Lt the cowboys ride
Against the wind…

Good, Great and Glorious Ads

Since not everyone has been as appreciative of my efforts with the Good, Bad and Ugly Ads series as they should be, it seemed prudent to shake things up a bit from time to time.  Hence, Good, Great and Glorious Ads, as well as Bad, Ugly and Awful Ads.  Oh, and if these new approaches are still not to your complete and utter satisfaction, I would tell you what you can do with the point of your view if saying things like that did not now leave such a bitter taste in my mouth.  Therefore, be ye thankful!

GOOD

GREAT

TFT: ZZ Top

Link: [ZZ Top]

Not every song that will be featured here will be what is generally considered as being “Christian” in the eyes of this world.  For some will be anguished cries from the pit of despair while others will be quite obviously fervent rants of rebellion.  Nonetheless, be assured that they will all be of our Heavenly Father (in one way or another) and I hope that you have been given ears to hear the message.

***ACHTUNG***
This will be the last TWO FOR TUESDAY here.  For the series will be moving over to The Trib in order to make room for me to participate in the fun to be had with [The Mag].  Of course, they may not have me.  So, we’ll see what happens next.  Hey, I’m all giddy with excitement—are you?

Stages
ZZ Top
It's a fine time to fall in love with you
I ain't got a single thing to do
It happened before I knew what was going on
I fell out and knew that I was gone

Stages
Keep on changing
Stages
Rearranging love

Then you left me standing all alone
I couldn't even get you on the phone
Were you just confused and didn't know
If you should stay or if you had to go

Stages
Keep on changing
Stages
Rearranging love

Now you're back and say you're gonna stay
I wouldn't have it any other way
Tell me it's for real and let me know
Why does loving have to come and go

Stages
Keep on changing
Stages
Rearranging love

I Thank You
ZZ Top
You didn't have to love me like you did
But you did
But you did
And I thank you
You didn't have to love me like you did
But you did
But you did
And I thank you
But you took your love
To someone else
I wouldn't know what it meant to be
Loved to death
You made me feel
Like I've never felt
Kisses so good
I had to holler for help

You didn't have to squeeze it
But you did
But you did
But you did
And I thank you
You didn't have to hold it
But you did
But you did
But you did
And I thank you
Every day was something new
You put on your bag and your fine to-do
You got me trying new things too
Just so I can keep up with you

You didn't have to shake it
But you did
But you did
But you did
And I thank you
You didn't have to make it like you did
but you did
But you did
And I thank you
All my life
I've been shortchanged
Without your love baby
It's a crying shame
But now I know
What the fella’s talking about
Hear me say
That they’ve been turned out
I want to thank you
I want to thank you
I want to thank you
Yes
I want to thank you

Come Monday...A Very Dark Day, Indeed

“Come Monday…” is a weekly series that will involve a review of, or commentary about,  websites, movies, documentaries, television shows, sports, music, and whatever else may tickle my fancy at the time.  Be assured that these reviews will be generally positive, as in accordance to the Jimmy Buffett song “Come Monday.”  This is subject to change, however.  In fact, I would be most derelict in my duties to neglect going on a rant every once in a while.  For rants promote change, and change can be good—right?  Therefore, since good is generally considered as being a positive force in 99.3% of the parallel universes that I am aware of, even a rant could be considered as being something positive, and a genuine hissy-fit would be even better (so I’m told).

A couple of weeks ago, a free HBO/Cinemax weekend was provided through Mediacom, and it was met with tepid enthusiasm in our household.  For it was the [HBO series] that we most rejoiced in while we still had the premium cable network, and after missing a complete season of [True Blood] and [Game of Thrones], too much blood had been spilled to get back into the full flow of the shows.

Oh, but HBO also has movies, and they often have really good ones long before they can be seen for free (in a very relative sense) elsewhere.  So, after perusing what was available at the time, I spotted three movies that had piqued my interest when they were being promoted after being first released for viewing in theaters.

The first one was [Prometheus], which is a prequel to [Alien].  I did not know that beforehand, but I had my suspicions after seeing one of the last scenes.

Now, I do not want to give too much away for the benefit of those who have not seen Prometheus yet, but I can say that any true fan of the Alien movies should be all giddy with excitement over the upcoming release of [Prometheus 2].  For what was started in Prometheus will be continued in Prometheus 2, and all will be rightly wrong in the Alien world after all the terrifying dots have been connected.

I am not a fan of the Alien movies—true or otherwise.  Subsequently, I am very sorry for wasting two hours or so on watching Prometheus, and I am most certainly not eagerly awaiting the birth of Prometheus 2.

Yeah, I could have just stopped watching the movie, but I wanted to see what was going to happen next.  After I did, the grieving started in earnest for me.

Ah, but I had high hopes in [Dark Shadows] being as funny as it appeared to be from the trailers released in 2012.  After all, any movie starring [Johnny Depp] has to be a scream—right?

What is it that they say about hindsight being 20/20?  Well, after actually watching the movie, I can now see all sorts of clues in the trailer to indicate that Dark Shadows was not going to be nearly as funny as I was hoping it would be.

Now, it had its moments.  Granted, not all that many more than were shown in the trailer, but the soundtrack was killer.  That is, unless you are not a fan of rock music in the 60s and 70s.  Hey, they even had [Alice Cooper] performing live (or at least looking like he was)!

Oh, but I could not get over what started it all.  For the reason why Barnabas Collins was made into a vampire was on account of how badly he had treated one of the servant girls in his father’s household, and he absolutely refused to even just acknowledge what he had done—let alone be sorrow about it.  Yeah, real-life morality has no place in reviews of vampire movies, I know.

My last hope for salvaging the day was pinned on [Moonrise Kingdom].  Hey, any movie with [Bruce Willis], [Bill Murray] and [Francis McDormand] has to be quirky good fun—right?

No, it most certainly does not.  Although, I am sure that those not quite right in the head would argue otherwise—especially in the case of Moonrise Kingdom.  For the accidental killing of the faithful troop dog and the open anguish of a very bad marriage between Bill and Francis’ characters were all in good fun—right?

I must admit that the movie did have several parts that the [Monty Python] blokes ought to have been rather pleased with, and the natural cringing from being reminded of just how awkward our first sexual explorations were was mollified somewhat by how sweetly the scenes were depicted.  Okay, maybe it is just me who has cringe-worthy memories to forget.

Speaking of such, remembering [my time] in the Boy Scouts of America always bring a big smile to my face.  Well, at least most of those memories do.  Anyway, Khaki Scouts are NOT to be confused with genuine Boy Scouts!

Come to think of it, maybe June 15, 2013 was not just a very dark day for watching movies available on HBO.  For all three of those movies were released in 2012!

If you have noticed that I have not mentioned Arlynda’s reactions to any of the movies, there is a good reason for that.  Suffice to say that I lost my cable/TV remote privileges for several days, and I do not look to be let off of probation anytime soon.  Triple-sigh and two groans.
