Come Monday...Social Insecurities

“Come Monday…” is a weekly series that will involve a review of, or commentary about,  websites, movies, documentaries, television shows, sports, music, and whatever else may tickle my fancy at the time.  Be assured that these reviews will be generally positive, as in accordance to the Jimmy Buffett song “Come Monday.”  This is subject to change, however.  In fact, I would be most derelict in my duties to neglect going on a rant every once in a while.  For rants promote change, and change can be good—right?  Therefore, since good is generally considered as being a positive force in 99.3% of the parallel universes that I am aware of, even a rant could be considered as being something positive, and a genuine hissy-fit would be even better (so I’m told).

You may already know of just how much “fun” Arlynda and I have been having the last 11 months or so.  If you don’t, it started with my eyesight suddenly becoming significantly poorer due to diabetic complications in June, followed by Arlynda finally losing her job and our health care insurance in November.  We then we lost our only other source of income in January, and the cherry on top has been finding out that Arlynda has non-alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver and has a prognosis of 2-5 years to live without a transplant.

The reason why we lost our only other source of income was due to the fact that we had to cash in Arlynda’s 401K plan in order to make up for the loss of income coming from her job, and that caused our bank balance to go over $3,000.00, which was too much for me to receive any more S.S.I. compensation until it dropped below that limit.

With having a rather twisted sense of humor, I actually laughed when we received the letter in January that demanded a return of the money I had been given for the November and December before.  For here we were in more desperate need of every dime we could get our grubby little hands on, and they were wanting over $600.00 dollars of their money back!

Oh, we have received some more insight into why the Social Security disability judge I appeared before the last two times my case came up was so against me.  For it was in his opinion that I must not be all that bad off since I had stopped seeking medical attention on a regular basis.  No wonder he completely dismissed the testimony of the Social Security vocational expert both times he insisted that there was no work that I could do!

Well, there is evidently no known treatment for [Chronic Fatigue Syndrome].  So, why would I want to spend every ounce of energy I would have at the time on going to hear that in person—especially when it usually takes 2-3 days for me to recover my usual 10-15% energy level in comparison to what I had before I started going downhill in a hurry in 1993?  Of course, if I had of known that I would be appearing before a judge like I did, it might have been worth the agony.

Anyway, we are in a little better financial situation now.  For Arlynda was miraculously granted full disability status by the Social Security Administration around a month after she first applied, and my benefits have been evidently restored.  Since I have not received a letter of explanation yet, I cannot be completely sure, but as long as they keep depositing some money in our account around the first of every month, no letter of explanation is necessary.  It will be much less now that Arlynda is receiving full disability benefits, but every dollar counts!

We are currently having too much “fun” with the Missouri Division of Family Services over [Medicaid] for Arlynda.  For they keep insisting that they have not received enough information yet without making it clear just what is missing.  We have never applied for me, and now that we cannot afford to pay for regular health care insurance, I suppose we will have to take care of that after the current mess is cleared up.

The saddest thing of all is that we would not have to be applying for Medicaid, nor wondering if I am going to receive another S.S.I. check, if just half of the people who have visited this site since I first made a Kindled version of [The Crackerhead Chronicles] available for a dollar, and started saying things about just how much we could use the money, had made a purchase.  Frankly, I do not know how many Kindled versions of The Crackerhead Chronicles and The Minister and The Crackerhead have sold yet, but I do know that it has not been enough for Amazon to deposit any money in our account.

No, we are not even close to being out of the financial weeds yet.  For we had to live off of our credit cards until the Social Security money started coming in, and we also owe several thousands of dollars in medical bills.

Yeah, it is tough all over these days, but all I have been asking for is a dollar purchase of one the Kindled books, and maybe a straight $5.00 donation to my PayPal account.  Only one person has given a donation of any amount so far, and this was done before I started asking for help!

Hey, a published review of The Crackerhead Chronicles might do the most good of all!  For this might encourage many others to want to purchase a copy or at least leave a donation after reading the free versions of the books that our Heavenly Father has given me to publish on FishHawk Droppings.

Alas, maybe He really does hate my guts?  For surely it would not be much for Him to fill many a heart full of compassion for our plight.

On the other hand, our situation might be serving as more proof of just how hypocritical far too many political conservatives really are.  For they love to rant and rave about all of the hard-earned taxpayer dollars that are spent on social welfare programs while not wanting to contribute to the cause when they are given an opportunity to help someone stay off of the welfare rolls, and several of the regular visitors here do love them some tea.

Yeah, maybe it would be better for everyone if I would just find a hole to crawl into and shut up.  For the law of the jungle must be observed in order to insure the survival of our species—right?

  1. I'm still not working and I just pulled my last $100 out of my savings account (sock drawer) yesterday, so though I can't help you, I feel your pain. I haven't had health care since my job went to China in '05, though my last "half-pay" job had dental as a copay. I was making less money there than I was 30 years ago. I think our "sin" is waiting too long to get on the dole!

  8. Thanks for stopping by again, my dear Adullamite!!! No, I do not rate high enough on their scale. Besides, it is actually the poor ones, who think they have what it takes to get over on everyone else, who do the most yelling.

  10. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Angelika!!! We mailed what I hope will satisfy their request for more information today. Hopefully, it will not take much longer before we get the okay. For as it turns out, one of the side effects to cirrhosis of the liver is a build up of ammonia in the bloodstream, which causes you get in what appears to be a drunken stupor, and the medicine to treat that is now costing us around $100.00 a week without insurance.

Be assured that I greatly appreciate you making an appeal on our behalf on your Facebook page. Please let me know how we can help you.

Oh, and the remnants of vanity in my nature dictate a disclosure of the fact that I am now around 125 pounds lighter than I was at around 400 pounds in that picture. Of course, I am a far sight from when I could look in a mirror and smile. (LOL?)

  12. It was once said (and repeated many, many times)..."Life was not meant to be easy".

Never a truer statement was uttered, I believe. I wish it was otherwise.

It's frightening I don't know how you can afford those medical costs. I'm on an Aged Pension; and, fortunately, my medical expenses are free. Touch wood, I don't have any; and I've not been near a doctor in years. I hope the status quo remains!

I'm sorry for the hardships you and Arlynda are going through, Jerry. Trying to find that light (if, in fact, it does exist) at the end of the tunnel is so difficult. I know it's no consolation, but you are not alone.

I wish I could help out, but I can't, other than to hope that for you both things soon become much easier.
