Not every song that
will be featured here will be what is generally considered as being “Christian”
in the eyes of this world. For some will
be anguished cries from the pit of despair, and others will be quite obviously
fervent rants of rebellion. Nonetheless,
be assured that they will all be of our Heavenly Father (in one way or another)
and I hope that you have been given ears to hear the message.
My City Was Gone
(Ohio)
The Pretenders
All right Diane
This is a song I wrote about
Mt beautiful hometown
Akron
Ohio
Let’s hear it for Akron
I went back to Ohio
But my city was
gone
There was no train
station
There was no
downtown
Southtown it had
disappeared
All my favorite
places
My city had been
pulled down
Reduced to parking
spaces
Hey
Oh
Where did you go
Ohio
I went back to Ohio
But my family was
gone
I stood on the back
porch
There was nobody
home
I was stunned and
amazed
My childhood
memories
Saw this world past
Like the wind through
the trees
I Said
Hey
Oh
Where did you go
Ohio
I went back to Ohio
But my pretty
countryside
Had been paved down
the middle
By a government
that had no pride
The farms of Ohio
Had been replaced
by shopping malls
And Muzak filled
the air
From Seneca to
Cuyahoga Falls
I Said
Hey
Oh
Where did you go
Ohio
Where did you go
Ohio
Back On The Chain
Gang
The Pretenders
I found a picture
of you
Oh oh oh oh
What hijacked my
world that night
To a place in the
past
We've been cast out
of
Oh oh oh oh
Now we're back in
the fight
We're back on the
train
Yeah
Oh
Back on the chain
gang
A circumstance
beyond our control
Oh oh oh oh
The phone
The TV
And the News of the
World
Got in the house
like a pigeon from Hell
Oh oh oh oh
Threw sand in our
eyes
And descended like
flies
Put us back on the
train
Yeah
Oh
Back on the chain
gang
The powers that be
That force us to
live like we do
Bring me to my
knees
When I see what
they've done to you
But I'll die as I
stand here today
Knowing that deep
in my heart
They'll fall to
ruin one day
For making us part
I found a picture
of you
Oh oh oh oh
Those were the
happiest days of my life
Like a break in the
battle
Was your part
Oh oh oh oh
In the wretched
life of a lonely heart
Now we're back on
the train
Yeah
Oh
Back on the chain
gang

Some songs are just timeless! I just heard a song yesterday that was written for Amy Winehouse- a sad story/ending for that beautiful lost too soon artist.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by again, my dear Sandy!!! I looked high and low for a video for "My City Was Gone" that I had seen a couple of years ago, which included actual pictures of how run-down Akron had become, but I failed to find it. Of course, I had always known the song to be "Ohio," the not-so-welcome opening to the Rush Limbaugh show. No, Chrissie and the rest of The Pretenders were not happy with him using it.
ReplyDeleteI almost forgot about this group, thanks for reminding me, they are good!
ReplyDeleteJanet :)
