Come Monday...Looking For Sites To See

“Come Monday…” is a weekly series that will involve a review of, or commentary about,  websites, movies, documentaries, television shows, sports, music, and whatever else may tickle my fancy at the time.  Be assured that these reviews will be generally positive, as in accordance to the Jimmy Buffett song “Come Monday.”  This is subject to change, however.  In fact, I would be most derelict in my duties to neglect going on a rant every once in a while.  For rants promote change, and change can be good—right?  Therefore, since good is generally considered as being a positive force in 99.3% of the parallel universes that I am aware of, even a rant could be considered as being something positive, and a genuine hissy-fit would be even better (so I’m told).

I have been asked several times just how I find all of the sites for my [Sites To See] series.  Even though I was always quite willing to give an answer at the time since I work really hard at appearing to be a wonderful person, I am now willing to spill all of the beans (so to speak).

First of all, I do not believe that I actually “find” any of them.  For the old adage about even a blind squirrel can find a nut every once in a while is incomplete.   For in the same way as nuts are placed in front of blind squirrels, sites are placed where I can see them.  (I will leave just who may be in charge of nut-placement for you to constipate on at your convenience.)

Of course, it helps to also be given a talent for lurking in the shadows.  For that is usually the only way really ugly guys can get dates with relatively sober girls, and despite the fact that I have always had to  beat ‘em off with a stick, it is good to know that there is little I am incapable of.

Yeah, I was being quite humble there.  For the truth is that there is nothing I am incapable of.

I am sorry.  I do not mean to make you feel like there is no way that you could ever find a good site to see on your own.  Life can be rather daunting, I know, but if you will just follow my instructions to the letter, you will always be much better off.

Back when I was first given the idea in February of 2008, the Sites To See series started off as Five For Friday, and most of the sites came from what could be found on [Blog Catalog].  Sadly, the powers that be at Blog Catalog decided to shake things up 3-4 years ago, and it became quite a challenge to find much of anything I wanted to there.  So, I stopped making regular visits, and I suppose it wouldn’t be a bad idea for me to cut all ties with Blog Catalog before they decide to make even more drastic changes.

The next happy hunting ground was [Entrecard], which was a lot of fun while it lasted.  The fun stopped for me after they hinted at monetizing the points that one could accumulate from dropping and then failed to deliver in an extremely ugly fashion.

[Adgitize] came next, and it did not take long before I became just as disillusioned with it.  Considering the fact that both Entrecard and Adgitize are now defunct, maybe I wasn’t being as hard to please as some thought.

Anyway, I have been shown since that the real treasure trove of sites well worth seeing can be found on individual blogrolls and following lists—especially on high quality sites.  For birds of a feather really do tend to flock together.

Aside from stalking around in the owner profiles of sites I am considering for inclusion, it has been brought to my attention that checking out the profiles of those who leave comments can sometimes lead to some rather interesting discoveries (sometimes not).

Now, in regards to what makes the grade, I really am incredibly fair.  For as is explained in the Sites To See disclaimer at the top of each edition, I am looking for what may be found to be interesting in one way or another, and even disgusting sites can sometimes be considered interesting when enough adult beverages are consumed (sometimes not).

When it comes to order of placement, I have a system that goes by when a site is found, and each section is listed in alphabetical order.  This is the way sites are also listed in each edition.

Alas, if all was as it should be, it would normally take around six months from the first time I see a site to when it is actually included in a Sites To See, but all has not been as it should be since lightning took out our previous computer [last June].  For one of the files that I failed to make a back-up of was the one that held the order of the sites waiting to be seen, and adding all the more to the grief I endure for your viewing pleasure, dropping those who have not seen fit to get rid of the [awful] word verification spam detection thingy has forced me to basically start from scratch.  So, newly discovered sites are often mixed in with those that have been on the list for months.

Oh, and that should help with what gives with the images I include for each site.  For I look for something that catches my attention when I first visit a site.  Therefore, the image may be from an older article.

Since I use the same image from when a site was in a Sites To See when it comes time for it to be included in a A Sunday Drive, you can count on it being from a fairly old article.  For it usually takes around a year before that time comes, which follows the previous order for sites that are still fairly active (at least one post in the preceding three months).  Although, the time in between should be getting shorter with sites that have the word verification thingy engaged no longer being included.

Oh yeah, that word verification monstrosity has become the bane of my online existence.  For checking to see if an owner has it engaged takes a lot of time that I do not have to spare, and there are times when I wonder if you-all are worth all of the trouble.  Then my wife gives me another concussive head-slap, and I endeavor to persevere some more.

Trib Updates

This is a weekly series that will include a brief summary of the latest articles that have been published on The Tribulation Times Herald-Exhorter.  Hopefully, this will encourage you to go check out some truly outstanding articles that have been published by a number of truly outstanding authors.  Moreover, I hope this will also encourage you to want to become a contributing member/author, as well.  The “Hear Ye!  Hear Ye!” site explanation near the top of the side-bar should answer many of your questions.  Yes, this series also included an “SOS! (Spam On Saturdays)”  segment before, but it just wasn’t working for me.  Therefore, that will be replaced by a republishing of one of the Trib articles.

[K.I.S.S. II?] has me wondering if Black Veil Brides could be another KISS.

[Ron Jones – Star Trek – Where No One Has Gone Before – Talk With Mom] includes a fairly well done video slide show from Lavender Darwin.

[Why I Will NEVER Have A Vasectomy!] is by you know who about you know what.

[Ham, Anyone?] contains a cartoon that I think is really funny.

[Lavender Darwin Captured and Arrested By Militant Urologists!!] indicates that it may be a while before we hear any more from Lavender, and that he may be speaking with a much higher voice when we do.

Last March, I published [Slick Adgitizing] as part of the [Come Monday] series on AsTheCrackerheadCrumbles.  It was about how several place non-Adgitize ads right up against the Adgitize widget, which makes them indistinguishable from the ones that Adgitize members click-on to get points.

After exchanging emails with Ken Brown, the owner(?) of Adgitize, he assured me that he would check it out when he finished some project he was working on.  I never heard anything back from him after that, but several weeks later, I did notice that he had added a razor-thin border to the widget, which was useless from my evidently overly cynical point-of-view.

With no official notice, many more are now doing the same thing.  I was preparing an update, which would have included linked-icons of the sites that I have noticed, but I suppose it is a mute point now.  For my patience with Mr. Brown has run-out, and I will be deleting my Adgitize account in the next day or two.

No, it is not just on account of the slick adgitizing issue that I am leaving.  For when I went to renew the ad for this site, I found that I did not have enough in my PayPal account.  When I went to see what was going on, I discovered that the last payment I had received from Adgitize was on September 8th for $12.59, which was down from the $15.31 that I had been paid on August 6th.

Needlessly to say, I was confused.  For a post is published each and every day on AsTheCrackerheadCrumbles, which is where the Adgitize widget is located, and several articles are published here each week.  Furthermore, I had been making enough drops to earn the limit of 100 points every day until I stopped last week on account of having better things to do.

When I asked Mr. Brown about what was going on via email around four hours ago, I received a reply a couple of hours later, which is certainly commendable.  What he said was not.

I am showing earnings of $3.18 for September and $4.73 for October. That is less than the necessary $10 threshold to receive a payment from Adgitize.

When I look at your points earned for September and October you are earning 270 points a day which translate into 9 to 11 cents a day. On the 3 days in October you wrote an article on your blog you earned over 350 points. That would have earned you around 54 cents a day. It doesn't appear you have written an article since mid October that we have recorded.

To be honest about it, I have never understood his points system, but I suspect that the main reason for why my income decreased so rapidly is on account of the content.  For last February, he notified me that much of what I publish was falling well short of what he considers to be original content, and after I explained to him that there is still a great deal of work involved in even publishing my [Sites To See/A Sunday Drive] and [WhiteHeart Wednesday] series, he graciously apologized and all went merrily along until September.

Alas, I first joined Adgitize in April of 2009.  If you want to stay, proceed at your own risk.

***UPDATE***
Since this was published, I received another email from Mr. Brown that suggested that I had not informed them of the RSS feed change to AsTheCrackerheadCrumbles, which occurred after the original Feedburner RSS feed for that site just quit working.  Since I had not received any notice of them no longer being able to pick up my feed, I assumed that it had automatically switched like it did in other cases.  Nonetheless, I am still done.

Come Monday...Slick Adgitizing

If you haven’t noticed before, may I now please direct your attention to my side-bar, and if you will scroll down a little bit from the top, you will see an [Adgitize] widget. Cutting to the chase, Adgitize is another advertising service that is quite similar to Entrecard.

No, that is just not right. For unlike Entrecard, you can actually make some money with Adgitize, and also unlike Entrecard (very much unlike, actually), the management of Adgitize is very accessible.

Speaking of such, I contacted Mr. Ken Brown, who is the owner-operator, chief cook and head bottle washer at Adgitize, a few weeks ago about something that really bothers me, and he assured me that he would immediately look into it. Some progress has been made, but there is a long way to go.

The thing that really bothers me is the placing of other ads very close to the top of the Adgitize widget. Some even take it as far as to place them right up against the top.

No, that would not be a problem with an Entrecard widget. For they only hold one ad at a time.  Whereas, an Adgitize widget can hold several, with there being a number of options available on how many and the configuration.

It really is pretty slick. For unless you are aware of what is going on, you will click on those "other" ads while thinking that you are scoring Adgitize points.

No, this is not to say that everyone who has placed "other" ads way too close to their Adgitize widget have done so with nefarious intentions. In fact, I am quite sure that some were just trying to make their sites look more presentable when they set it up that way.

Nonetheless, it is still something to look out for. For there are only so many hours in a day, and making wasted Adgitize clicks just makes the day a little shorter for something else.

On the other hand, if you are happy to click-on the "other" ads, this is all a moot point—isn’t it? That is, except for rewarding the efforts of those who are trying to be slick, of course. Perhaps it would make it easier to justify by thinking of them as being clever—huh?

Included below are some of the sites that I am talking about. Be assured that there are many more.
