Come Monday...Nothing To Sneeze At

“Come Monday…” is a weekly series that will involve a review of (or commentary about) websites, movies, documentaries, television shows, sports, music, and whatever else may tickle my fancy at the time.  Be assured that these reviews will be generally positive, as in accordance to the Jimmy Buffett song “Come Monday.”  This is subject to change, however.  In fact, I would be most derelict in my duties to neglect going on a rant every once in a while.  For rants promote change, and change can be good—right?  Therefore, since good is generally considered as being a positive force in 99.3% of the parallel universes that I am aware of, even a rant could be considered as being something positive, and a genuine hissy-fit would be even better (so I’m told).

I must admit that I needed to look it up.  For I thought I understood what the old expression nothing to sneeze at really meant, but I was not completely sure.

It turned out that it would make a good title for this piece.  For nothing to sneeze at is about calling added attention to something, and it was a series of fairly violent sneezes that has had me down for the count the last month.

Well, not exactly.  For it all started around three years ago when I had all of my weight on my right leg while stretching to change the month on a calendar we had hanging on the wall behind our main television set, and I started to lose my balance.  When I went to try to regain it, I felt a sharp pain in the back of my right thigh.

The pain in my right thigh has stayed with me.  Be assured that I would like for it to go away, but since it really hasn’t been all that bad most of the time, I have not sought medical treatment for it.

Yeah, that probably sounds plumb idiotic to you, but everything I go to do costs me dearly.  For I only have a small amount of energy to expend each day, and anything that requires leaving the house always takes it all and then some.  So, since going to the doctor has done nothing to make me actually feel better the last 20 years, I am quite reluctant to waste energy on going to one.

Oh, but that changed after that series of sneezes snuck up on me, and I did not have my right leg braced for the recoils.  For it felt like someone had a hold of part of the muscle that goes from my hip to the back of my knee and had snapped the lose end near my knee like one would snap a whip.  If you don’t know anything about whips, think of snapping a wet towel at someone.

Yes, it really hurt when that happened, but the big problem did not come to light until several days later.  For ingesting around 40 (in total) 325 mg aspirin and 200 mg Advil/ibuprofen pills throughout the course of a day failed to dull the much more intense pain in the back of my right thigh enough to allow me to sleep for more than an hour at a time, which was a much bigger problem than the pain.  For the lack of sleep magnified my daily misery a hundredfold.

So, it was finally decided that I should go to the emergency room to see if there was a way to fix my leg.  Evidently, there is not, but they did write me a prescription for flexeril and tramadol, which is helping to get me some sleep.

No, I do not think I will make a habit out of going to the emergency room.  For all but one of the doctors and nurses that worked on me seemed to be quite focused on doing harm—certainly not alleviating my suffering.

On the other hand, it may have been just me being contrary.  For a 20cc (at least) shot of morphine did nothing to take my mind off of how much I was hurting.

I will have more to say about it later on, but for now, let it suffice to say that I think I may have suffered another minor stroke before all of the fun was over with.  For my eyesight became bad again, and my overall energy level has been much lower than usual.

No, I am not quite ready to start publishing stuff on a regular basis again, but I am able to type better.  So, I will start paying more visits and leaving comments when I can.  Be assured that I deeply appreciate the concern that I have been shown.

  5. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Grace!!! As far as I know is that the only diagnosis was severe pain in the back of my right thigh. They took an x-ray, but it did not show any damage to my bones or joints. Since they gave me that big shot of morphine, I would like to think that they did not think I was just faking it to get attention or something.

  6. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Ann!!! Well, I am feeling rather stupid. For it was not until after I went through all of that mess that I recognized a way for me to lay in bed without putting any direct pressure on the area with the torn muscle(s), which lets me go to sleep without ingesting any prescribed pain medication, which sets me free from having to go a doctor to get some, which is a big weight off of my slumping shoulders.

  8. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Lee!!! It was my wife's turn to go to the emergence room last Friday. She did not have quite as much fun as I did, but she did get to spend the night and most of Saturday in the hospital.

  11. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Lee!!! We were finally let in on the big secret, which is that her main doctor thought that she was about to have a heart attack because of having too much potassium in her blood stream. He had no answer for her when she asked him why it took so long to let us know what might be going on. Sigh.

  12. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Adullamite!!! Well, that really wouldn't be so bad except for the fact that they seem pretty serious about keeping it that way. Although, we are both a little concerned about them not acting like they will starve after we pass on...
