TFT: The Temptations

Not every song that will be featured here will be what is generally considered as being “Christian” in the eyes of this world.  For some will be anguished cries from the pit of despair while others will be quite obviously fervent rants of rebellion.  Nonetheless, be assured that they will all be of our Heavenly Father (in one way or another) and I hope that you have been given ears to hear the message.

Papa Was A Rolling Stone
The Temptations
It was the third of September
That day I'll always remember
Yes I will
‘Cause
That was the day
That my daddy died
I never got a chance to see him
Never heard nothin'
But bad things about him
Momma I'm dependin’ on you
To tell me the truth
Momma just hung her head
And said
Son

Papa was a rollin’ stone
Wherever he laid his hat was his home
And when he died
All he left us was alone
Papa was a rollin’ stone
My son yeah
Wherever he laid his hat was his home
And when he died
All he left us was alone

Well well

Hey momma
Is it true what they say
That papa never worked a day
In his life
And momma
Some bad talk goin' round town sayin'
That papa had three outside children
And another wife
And that ain't right
Heard them talking papa
Doin’ some storefront preachin'
Talked about saving souls
And all the time leachin’
Dealin’ in debt
And stealin’ in the name of the Lord
Momma just hung her head
And said

Papa was a rollin’ stone
My son
Wherever he laid his hat was his home
And when he died
All he left us was alone
Hey
Papa was a rollin’ stone
Yeah honey
Wherever he laid his hat was his home
And when he died
All he left us was alone

Hey momma
I heard papa called himself
A jack of all trades
Tell me is that what sent papa
To an early grave
Folks say papa would
Beg
Borrow
Steal
To pay his bills
Hey momma
Folks say papa never was
Much on thinkin’
Spent most of his time
Chasin’ women and drinkin’
Momma I'm dependin’ on you
To tell me the truth
Momma looked up with a tear in her eye
And said
Son

Papa was a rollin’ stone
Well well well well
Hey yeah
Wherever he laid his hat was his home
And when he died
All he left us was alone
Alone
Alone
Alone
Alone
Papa was a rollin’ stone
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Hey yeah
Wherever he laid his hat was his home
And when he died
All he left us was alone
I said hey
Papa was a rollin’ stone
Yes he was
My son
Wherever he laid his hat was his home
And when he died
All he left us was alone
My baby
Well
Yes he was
Papa was a rollin’ stone
Wherever he laid his hat was his home

Smiling Faces Sometimes
The Temptations
Smiling faces
Sometimes
Pretend
 To be your friend
Smiling faces
 Show no traces
Of the evil
That lurks within

Smiling faces
Smiling faces
 sometimes
They don't tell the truth
Smiling faces
Smiling faces
Tell lies
And I got proof

Let me tell ya
The truth is in the eyes
‘Cause the eye don't lie
Amen
Remember
A smile is just a frown
Turned upside down
My friend
Let me tell ya

Smiling faces
Smiling faces
Sometimes
They don't tell the truth
Smiling faces
Smiling faces
Tell lies
And I got proof

Beware
Beware of the handshake
That hides the snake
I'm telling you
Beware
Beware of the pat on the back
It just might
Hold you back
Jealousy
Jealousy
Misery
Misery
Envy
Envy
I tell ya
You can't see behind

Smiling faces
Smiling faces
Sometimes
They don't tell the truth
Smiling faces
Smiling faces
Tell lies
And I got proof
Smiling faces
Smiling faces
Sometimes
They don't tell the truth
Smiling faces
Smiling faces
Tell lies
And I got proof
Smiling faces
Smiling faces
Sometimes
Smiling faces
Smiling faces
Sometimes

Ah
I'm telling you
Beware
Beware of the handshake
That hides the snake
Listen to me now
Beware
Beware of that pat on the back
It just might
Hold you back

Smiling faces
Smiling faces
Sometimes
They don't tell the truth
Smiling faces
Smiling faces
Tell lies
And I got proof

Your enemy
Won't do you no harm
‘Cause you'll know where
He's coming from
Don't let the handshake
And the smile fool ya
Take my advice
I'm only try' to school ya

Smiling faces
Smiling faces
Sometimes
They don't tell the truth
Smiling faces
Smiling faces
Tell lies
And I got proof
Smiling faces
Smiling faces
Sometimes
They don't tell the truth
Smiling faces
Smiling faces
Tell lies
And I got proof

Beware
Beware of the handshake

The impossible task
Is to figure out
Which of the smiles
Is a mask

Listen to me
Did you hear me
The impossible task
Is to figure out
Which of the smiles
Is a mask

Smiling faces
Smiling faces
Sometimes
Don't show the truth
Smiling faces
Smiling faces
Tell lies
And I got proof
Smiling faces
Smiling faces
Sometimes
Smiling faces
Smiling faces
Sometimes

Smiling faces
Smiling faces
Sometimes
They don't tell the truth
Smiling faces
Smiling faces
Tell lies
And I got proof
Smiling faces
Smiling faces
Sometimes
Smiling faces
Smiling faces
Sometimes

  2. I didn't listen to the first once because I do remember that one. I had to play the second video since I couldn't recall ever hearing it. I do slightly remember it. Not anything I would go searching for

  3. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Ann!!! Hmm, a couple more less-than-ecstatic comments like that and I will be seeing about having a little talk with a certain someone about a certain something.

Why can't I remember these great tunes I love when Music Monday rolls around? Great picks Jerry!! Awesome picks!!

  6. I just had to stop and have a wee listen. My satellite feed is running slow so I couldn't listen all the way through.

Oh I needed this extra little pick up to get me through the night!

    Happy evening ya'll!

  9. Wonderful post, thank you!
My son and I discussed how much we enjoyed a TV movie about The Temptations that we had seen years ago, and my son got it for me as a DVD for Christmas! Watch it if you ever get the chance. You'd like it, I'm sure.
Great stuff too in the movie about a great guy, Smokey Robinson.

  10. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Kay!!! I think I remember that movie, and it was indeed quite enthralling. Be assured that Smokey Robinson will get his turn in this series. For Tears of a Clown is one my brother's all-time favorite song.
