“Come Monday…” is a
weekly series that will involve a review of, or commentary about, websites, movies, documentaries, television
shows, sports, music, and whatever else may tickle my fancy at the time. Be assured that these reviews will be
generally positive, as in accordance to the Jimmy Buffett song “Come
Monday.” This is subject to change,
however. In fact, I would be most
derelict in my duties to neglect going on a rant every once in a while. For rants promote change, and change can be
good—right? Therefore, since good is
generally considered as being a positive force in 99.3% of the parallel
universes that I am aware of, even a rant could be considered as being
something positive, and a genuine hissy-fit would be even better (so I’m told).
We
have only watched one episode of [American Idol] this season, and I must admit
that the main reason for why we wanted to see even that first one was on account of
all of “stuff” that had been reported about the feud between [Nicki Minaj] and
[Mariah Carey]. For Arlynda and I have been steadily losing interest in the show for quite some time now.
The
reason for why we have been losing interest in the show is because of our
questioning the integrity of the process—especially in the rounds that whittle
the field down to the final 12 or so.
For they often let through those whom make us look at each other with great
disbelief and dismiss others we consider as being truly great.
Yeah,
it all comes down to musical tastes, but keep in mind that I am huge fan of [Led Zeppelin], whose songs have Robert Plant doing more screaming than singing much
of the time. Therefore, it is really
saying something (so to speak) when a singer makes me cringe, and there have
been several let through by the judges on American Idol over the years who have
had me checking to see how badly my ears were bleeding.
Alas,
I cannot say for sure that the days of a [Kelly Clarkson] or [Carrie Underwood]
being discovered are over, but I do wonder if either one of them would even
receive a golden ticket to Hollywood these days. Now, I was a fan of [Phillip Phillips], who
won last season, but that had much more to do with his incredible guitar
playing than his singing abilities.
When
it appeared to be worse this year, we just couldn’t bring ourselves to watch
another episode. Nonetheless, we were
pleasantly surprised to see that Nicki Minaj is not the ogre she was being presented
as being like. In fact, she came across
as being quite endearing in her support of many of the contestants while
[Keith Urban] came across as a tone-deaf jerk more times than not.
Alas,
it may very well be that Arlynda and I are just a whole lot older and crankier
than we would like to recognize, but we cannot see American Idol lasting too
much longer. In fact, we would be
surprised if this is not the last season for the show, but in all fairness, we
are absolutely shocked that [The Voice] is being brought back. For that show makes American Idol look like
a serious competition.

I like Nicki on the show...she cracks me up often with her comments. She and Keith seem to get along very well; and I disagree with your comments re Keith Urban...but that's allowed...each to their own opinions, of course.
ReplyDeleteA lass they let through last week, Kree Harrison really deserved to go through...to my mind, she is a wonderful young singer. No bells or whistles or excessive trimmings needed...she just stands there and lets her pure voice tell the story.
Thanks for stopping by, my dear Lee!!! Okay, since my assessment of Keith was based solely upon the first episode of this season, it may very well be grossly unfair. Be assured that I would like to believe that. For I am a big fan of his music, and even though Arlynda generally doesn't like his music--despite being a huge country fan, she is pulling for him and Nicole to make it. In any event, he didn't come across as being anymore tone-deaf and a jerk than the rest of them did at one time or another, and I wouldn't have mentioned anything particularly negative about him on the show if I wasn't expecting so much more out of him.
ReplyDeleteI think you should give him another go, Jerry...he's fair and just in his assessments...and polite while doing so. I hope he and Nic go the distance, too...I'm an Aussie plugging for Aussies. They're a good pairing, I reckon!
ReplyDeleteI've enjoyed American Idol in the past but am having somewhat of a hard time getting into it this year. It's become more of something I have on the TV while folding laundry or getting stuff ready for work the next day. Having said that, Keith Urban's charm is one of the things I've enjoyed about it. I've also found Nicki to be amusing and I appreciate the way she can be supportive of the contestants.
