Come Monday...Arlynda's Super Bowl Parties

“Come Monday…” is a weekly series that will involve a review of, or commentary about,  websites, movies, documentaries, television shows, sports, music, and whatever else may tickle my fancy at the time.  Be assured that these reviews will be generally positive, as in accordance to the Jimmy Buffett song “Come Monday.”  This is subject to change, however.  In fact, I would be most derelict in my duties to neglect going on a rant every once in a while.  For rants promote change, and change can be good—right?  Therefore, since good is generally considered as being a positive force in 99.3% of the parallel universes that I am aware of, even a rant could be considered as being something positive, and a genuine hissy-fit would be even better (so I’m told).

My longsuffering wife, Arlynda, was not necessarily a football fan before we were married.  Oh, she would be glad to hear of the [Cabool Bulldogs] and/or the [Missouri Tigers] winning, but she had little desire to actually watch a game.  Hence, one of the reasons why the efforts that she has made the past several years to watch the [Super Bowl] with me are so special.

No, the parties that she puts on are nothing spectacular—certainly not in comparison to some.  For she will usually just fix [nachos] and a few other things like that, but it is amazing just how good it all tastes while watching her become so involved in the game.

It could be argued that she had an added vested interest in the game that was played yesterday evening.  For [The Blind Side] is one of her all-time favorite movies, and [Michael Oher] is a starting offensive lineman for the [Baltimore Ravens].

Oh my, there was something for just about everyone to Super Bowl XLVII—with not the least of these involving the head coaches for both teams.  For [John Harbaugh] is the head coach of the Baltimore Ravens, and his younger brother, [Jim], is the head coach of the [San Francisco 49ers].

To be quite honest about it, I do not like Jim Harbaugh much at all.  For he appears to be a jerk in a number of ways, and putting icing on that cake is the fact that he appears to not care a thing about what others think of him.

In all fairness, Jim has done an amazing job of molding the 49ers into a truly great team—with [Vernon Davis] serving as a prime example of that.  For he caught a lot of passes for a lot of yards yesterday evening, and it was just five years ago when he was in danger of being [released] by the team for a number of reasons.

Speaking of stories of redemption, [Ray Lewis], of the Baltimore Ravens, was facing [murder charges] after two men were stabbed to death at a Super Bowl XXXIV party in Atlanta, Georgia in 2000.  Since then, he has become one of the most highly respected (beloved?) players in the game, and the announcement of his retirement after this season was completed surely had much to do with the Baltimore Ravens winning it all—much to the delight of my beloved wife.

Regardless of who wins or loses, I always win when Arlynda throws a Super Bowl party for us.  Of course, that will most definitely not be the case if my beloved [Cowboys] find themselves on the losing end someday, but since they have been doing everything they can to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory lately, it is not looking like I have any reason to be concerned about them even making it that far for several years to come.

  1. Your party sounds terrific and that is one of my favorite movies too. I did not know he played for Baltimore though.

Sadly, I agree with you about the Cowboys. They just haven't been the same team since Jerry Jones bought them!

I wish he would get a good coach in there and then leave them be so they can actually coach the team. Then we might win some games again!!

Sorry but I am not a Jerry Jones fan!! He should handle the money and stay off of the field!!

You just made the game interesting for me and I didn't even watch it!

    Thanks and happy Monday! :-)

  2. If you so much as breathe a word about Arlynda not only watching but having a super bowl party with actual snacks, to Wade Duke and I will be very very unhappy with you. I did watch the half time show with Wade but that was a total waste of time. I'm sure they may have been some people who thought it was good but I was not one of them

  3. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Jackie!!! Well, I am also not a big Jerry Jones fan, but it was after he bought the team and made it into what it became that the Cowboys won three Super Bowls in a four-year span back in the 90s.

  4. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Ann!!! Oh my, your "request" sounds like a wonderful opportunity for me to profit in ways that I am quite sure Duke will be most helpful with.

  5. I wanted the Ravens to win this year, and I'm glad that came to pass. Last year I watched them lose the championship to the Giants (who as you know went on to win the superbowl) because their kicker Billy Cundiff missed the field goal that would have sent them into overtime.

The Ravens played their guts out last year.

And I remember really being touched by the absolute despair I saw on faces like Ray Rice who exclaimed "Oh my god."

So yeah...they played their guts out all year long.

    They deserved to win.

  6. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Michael!!! We were both starting to get rather concerned when the 49ers made such a furious comeback after the power went out in the stadium, but it added to the elation of the Ravens hanging on in the end. From what I have observed, Ray Rice is the kind of player any team should want to have.

  7. That is sweet of you to say the party and snacks are better when your wife is getting into the game! I didn't know that man from the blind side was on the Ravens. I missed that somehow. I was rooting for the 49ers, but it was not meant to be.
    Have a great week,
    Janet :)

  8. Well, I'm really more like your wife was before you married- I can get into the game, but more often not! Especially these teams...oh so so...not! But I enjoy the hype, and all the big money spent on those things that break up the shows and we generally take our bathroom or food breaks during...ha ha ha! But for the length of the game- eyes are focused steady- we can pee after the commercial okay! Not! Of course I don't even need to watch them, because I've either seen it here on your blog or I will- so there TV land! Ha ha Ga HA! Although it seems most people must be getting bored with the commercial because I've heard more groan about them this year then ever. Even Twitter seemed to really run with that one Hot Player with all his INK! The cameras did have him scoped in most of the time...so there- probably more than you wanted to read- ! Have a cool week!

  9. 'Superbowl,' is this some sort of pottery competition?

  10. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Janet!!! I think you will really enjoy The Blind Side. For it is more about giving someone a break when they didn't have to than football.

  11. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Karen!!! I will include some thoughts in a special Super Bowl XLVII Ads edition on Wednesday. In the meantime, let it be known far and wide that Arlynda and I were generally disappointed with far too many of the ads being ho-hum at best.

  13. We had a very small (just us two) party. We had some snacks and also I made a new shrimp dish for dinner.
I didnt care really either way who won as I watched this super bowl primarily for the commercials. (Steelers fan)
Glad you had a terrific time with your wife!
    She sounds very sweet.
