Come Monday...F.R.A. Number 34

“Come Monday…” is a weekly series that will involve a review of (or commentary about) websites, movies, documentaries, television shows, sports, music, and whatever else may tickle my fancy at the time.  Be assured that these reviews will be generally positive, as in accordance to the Jimmy Buffett song “Come Monday.”  This is subject to change, however.  In fact, I would be most derelict in my duties to neglect going on a rant every once in a while.  For rants promote change, and change can be good—right?  Therefore, since good is generally considered as being a positive force in 99.3% of the parallel universes that I am aware of, even a rant could be considered as being something positive, and a genuine hissy-fit would be even better (so I’m told).

If you are fairly familiar with the Star Trek television series from [The Next Generation] to [Voyager], you should also be fairly familiar with the [Ferengi] and their [Rules of Acquisition].  Rule of Acquisition Number 34 is: War is good for business.

Now, some might go so far as to suggest that this goes to prove that Americans are actually Ferengies (or at least that America is now being run from [Ferenginar]).  To be quite honest about it, I find this to be rather far-fetched.  For Star Trek is an American as [Superman], [Catwoman] and [Bigfoot].  So, if anything, Ferengies would be Americans by that line of reasoning.

Alas, there appears to be a great deal of evidence to support a contention that Americans are at least Ferengi at heart.  For from [Vietnam] on, most of our military actions have not been focused on actually resolving conflicts.  In fact, it could be argued that they have been mostly meant to make matters worse.

Take our actions in Vietnam for an example.  For we could have made a mud puddle out of North Vietnam in 1960 (or earlier) to stop the spread of communism in southeast Asia, but we chose to play a silly game of continually taking and giving back territories at an enormous cost of resources—with not the least of these being human lives.  Oh, but what are millions of lives in comparison to billions upon billions in profits?

Yeah, it could be argued that the Soviets would have taken great exception to us bombing North Vietnam back into the Stone Age, and therein lies a flaw in the American/Ferengi theory.  For just think how much money could have been made from a full-blown conventional war with the Soviet Union at the time!

No, there would not have been any danger of it turning nuclear.  For [mutual annihilation] is generally very bad for business.

Hmm…  Maybe that merely goes to prove that we are just not very good Ferengies?

In any event, here we go again with our plans to [punish the Assad regime] for daring to use chemical weapons in the current Syrian civil war when it makes much more sense that the rebels actually did it to themselves in the hope of provoking such a response.  Besides, what would be left if Assad is removed from power?

Oh yeah, the potential for profits is mind-boggling.  For a complete destabilization of Syria will surely lead to civil war in Turkey, and that would move at least [NATO] to become fully involved against an ever-growing number of enemies in a dozen (or more) other countries in different regions around the globe!

The really hard thing for me is that I like the idea of us coming to the rescue of those in need, but it has to be purely on account of it being the right thing to do.  No, this is not something that we appear to be capable of doing, anymore.   For all of our actions are strictly dictated by what is considered to be in our best interest.

Come on now, is that what Superman considers to be the American way?  Really?
