ATF: Jet-Setting

This series will include as many of my all-time favorite (ATF) tunes as I can get my grubby little hands on (so to speak).  Now, each one included in each edition will have some connection with the other—albeit only as a figment of my imagination, but they will not be numbered.  For I just cannot bring myself to rate some higher than others.  So, this will not be a countdown, but if you are enjoying them as much as I do, it won’t matter.  Besides, with no countdown, this could go on forever and ever!  Oh, and despite the fact that there is absolutely no way your musical tastes could be as exquisite as mine, I welcome any suggestions you might dare to make.  For I am, after all, quite magnanimous by nature.

Leaving on a Jet Plane
Peter, Paul & Mary
All my bags are packed
I'm ready to go
I'm standing here
Outside your door
I hate to wake you up
To say goodbye
But the dawn is breakin'
It's early morn
The taxi's waitin’
He's blowin' his horn
Already I'm so lonesome
I could cry

So kiss me
And smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go
I'm a-leavin'
On a jet plane
I don't know when I'll be back again
Oh babe
I hate to go

There's so many times
I've let you down
So many times
I've played around
I tell you now
They don't mean a thing
Every place I go
I think of you
Every song I sing
I sing for you
When I come back
I'll wear your wedding ring

So kiss me
And smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go
I'm a-leavin'
On a jet plane
I don't know when I'll be back again
Oh babe
I hate to go

Now the time has come
To leave you
One more time
Let me kiss you
Then close your eyes
And I'll be on my way
Dream about
The days to come
When I won't have to
Leave alone
About the times
I won't have to say

Kiss me
And smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go
I'm a-leavin'
On a jet plane
I don't know when I'll be back again
Leavin’
On a jet plane
I don’t know when I’ll be back again
Leavin’
On a jet plane
I don’t know when I’ll be back again
Oh babe
I hate to go

Jet Airliner
Steve Miller
Leavin' home out on the road
I've been down before
Ridin' along on this big ol' jet plane
I've been thinkin' about my home
But my love light seems so far away
And I feel like it's all been done
Somebody's tryin' to make me stay
You know I've got to be movin' on

Oh oh oh
Big ol' jet airliner
Don't carry me too far away
Oh oh oh
Big ol' jet airliner
‘Cause it's here that I've got to stay

Goodbye to all my friends at home
Goodbye to people I've trusted
I've got to go out and make my way
I might get rich
You know I might get busted
But my heart keeps calling me backwards
As I get on the 707
Ridin' high I got tears in my eyes
You know you got to go through hell
Before you get to heaven

Big ol' jet airliner
Don't carry me too far away
Oh oh oh
Big ol' jet airliner
‘Cause it's here that I've got to stay

Touchin' down in New England town
Feel the heat comin' down
I've got to keep on keepin' on
You know the big wheel keeps on spinnin' around
And I'm goin' with some hesitation
You know that I can surely see
That I don't want to get caught up in any of that
Funky kicks goin' down in the city

Big ol' jet airliner
Don't carry me too far away
Oh oh oh
Big ol' jet airliner
‘Cause it's here that I've got to stay
Oh oh oh
Big ol' jet airliner
Don't carry me too far away
Oh oh oh
Big ol' jet airliner
‘Cause it's here that I've got to stay

Yeah yeah yeah yeah

Big ol' jet airliner
Don't carry me too far away
Whoa oh oh
Big ol' jet airliner
‘Cause it's here that I've got to stay
Oh oh oh
Big ol' jet airliner
Carry me to my home
Oh oh oh
Big ol' jet airliner
‘Cause it's here that I've got to stay

Yeah yeah yeah yeah

Big ol’ jet airliner…

  1. Both songs, know them well. I suppose these days any songs about jet planes would need to include some kind of security clearance

    1. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Ann!!! I hear about people flying from LA to Las Vegas or Washington DC to New York, and I wonder why bother--especially with all of the "stuff" now required. If money was not an option, would you book a flight from Erie to Detroit? I sure wouldn't, and I don't understand why anyone would want to fly anywhere unless they absolutely had to or had their own plane.

  3. My Ray used to work for Capitol Records in the early 80s and met Steve Miller in the elevator. Said he was just the nicest guy. I told Ray I was soo jealous. Love Steve Miller.

    1. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Barb!!! I traded an ELO Greatest Hits 8-track for Steve Miller's Greatest Hits (I think) 8-track. What can I say? It was 1977, and I had not made the move to cassettes yet. Oh, and I am jealous of Ray, too!

  4. Peter, Paul, and Mary--bring back some fine memories of college, freshman year, bell bottoms...good times.

  8. Quite like that Peter Paul & Mary song evokes memories. Can't say I've ever heard the other song.

Don't mind the flying it's US Customs & Immigration that's a real bind. Don't think they have the staff!

    Thanks for dropping by.
