Warren Zevon vs. Linda Ronstadt

Carmelita
Warren Zevon
I hear Mariachi static on my radio
And the tubes they glow in the dark
And I'm there with her in Ensenada
And I'm here in Echo Park

Carmelita
Hold me tighter
I think I'm sinkin’ down
And I'm all strung out on heroin
On the outskirts of town

Well I'm sittin' here playing solitaire
With my pearl-handled deck
The county won't give me no more methadone
And they cut off your welfare check

Carmelita
Hold me tighter
I think I'm sinkin’ down
And I'm all strung out on heroin
On the outskirts of town

Well I pawned my Smith-Corona
And I went to meet my man
He hangs out down on Alvarado Street
By the Pioneer Chicken Stand

Carmelita
Hold me tighter
I think I'm sinkin’ down
And I'm all strung out on heroin
On the outskirts of town
Carmelita
Hold me tighter
I think I'm sinkin’ down
And I'm all strung out on heroin
On the outskirts of town

Carmelita
Linda Ronstadt
I hear Mariachi static on my radio
And the tubes they glow in the dark
And I'm there with you in Ensenada
And I'm here in Echo Park

Carmelita
Hold me tighter
I think I'm sinkin’ down
And I'm all strung out on heroin
On the outskirts of town

Well I pawned my Smith & Wesson
And I went to meet my man
He hangs out down on Alvarado Street
By the Pioneer Chicken Stand

Carmelita
Hold me tighter
I think I'm sinkin’ down
And I'm all strung out on heroin
On the outskirts of town

Well I'm sittin' here playin’ solitaire

And I'm all strung out on heroin
On the outskirts of town

  1. Thanks for stopping by again, my dear Sandie!!! I still do, and not just in regards to her music, neither, which gives Arlynda something else to laugh at me about. Sigh.

  2. Never heard this song before. Can't decide who's version I like better

  3. I would listen to/buy ANYTHING Linda Ronstadt recorded. She doesn't get hype. I'd love to hear her and K.D. Laing do a duet - or have they? I'll check it out...

(This other Warren guy - don't know who he is and glad of it - terrible stuff)

  4. I hadn't heard it either but do like hers.

  5. Thanks for stopping by again, my dear Ann!!! I am thinking that the first time I ever heard this song was Dwight Yoakam's version, but I didn't want to be responsible for Adullamite's and Grace's heads exploding. So, I picked Linda's, instead.

  6. Thanks for stopping by again, my dear Grace!!! Yeah, that Warren Zevon character sure was a no-talent hack. I mean, it's not like he ever wrote any songs that others wanted to record, nor ever had any HUGE hits of his own.

  7. Thanks for stopping by again, my dear Country Mouse!!! With it being such a bittersweet song, I wouldn't want to hear any version of it on a regular basis, but Linda is one whom I could listen to sing the phone book all day long.

  8. Well he sure as hell can't sing and the songs you presented have awful lyrics - there are a lot of no-talents that the public has taken up for reasons unknown!

  9. Thanks for stopping by again, my dear Grace!!! I hear you.

  10. No contest. Warren hands-down. Although, he did admit that LR's version, featuring the gun, rather than his with the typewriter, is probably the way he wrote it. He'd heard (and sung) both versions so often, he'd forgotten the original lyric.

  11. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Gumbo!!! I have been rather surprised at how some of my readers have reacted to Warren's music, and it's sure good to hear from a fan.

  12. to the ill-informed above calling Warren Zevon a no-talent hack and whatnot, your narrow-mindedness astounds me. Warren was a top notch songwriter worthy of mention alongside Bruce, Neil Young, Dylan and all the greats you can think of. Werewolves of London? that's just the start of it.

and granted, you may not like the music. but you might want to learn a bit about craft before you make any ridiculous "no talent" claims.

  13. ...and no one wanted to cover his songs? eh, there's an entire album with people like Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, Steve Earle all covering his songs. Bob, in fact, went so far as to say Warren was one of his favorite songwriters.

  14. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Anonymous. I was being sarcastic when I made those claims. The reply I made to Gumbo Limbo should have made that fairly clear.

  15. If you want to find out more info, his "official" website is pathetic. I suggest visiting warrenzevon.org, created by the same person who manages the Official WZ bulletin board.

  16. yep. didn't even notice it was the same person till after I posted the damn comments. how embarrassing.

  17. Thanks for stopping by again, my dear Gumbo!!! Thanks for the info. I'll check it out when I can.

  18. Thanks for stopping by again, my dear Anonymous!!! Hey, it happens, and I am very impressed with you coming back to make amends. For that doesn't happen enough (the world-over).
