Super Bowl XLVII Ads

Arlynda and I were generally very disappointed with the ads broadcast during Super Bowl XLVII.  For far too many of them were ho-hum, at best.

Should this not be quite telling?  For if the powers that be at a corporation do not understand that one would be better off not being in the spotlight if they do not have anything that really shines, there may very well be nothing special about their product(s).  So, why would you want to purchase what they have to offer when you could get something else?

A good example of someone not getting it is Century21 Real Estate.  For I cannot recall the last time I saw one of their ads on the television before Super Bowl XLVII.  In fact, I even went to see if any of the real estate agencies in the area were still affiliated with them when a thought about them maybe being out of business zipped through a few weeks ago, and there they go spending millions of dollars for two 30-second timeslots during the Super Bowl broadcast to be filled with ads that were most definitely nothing special.  Well, I must admit that I only remember seeing one of their ads, which says a lot.

Anyway, there were some truly specials ads, as well as some that will probably garner more attention on account of how horrible they were than anything else (any publicity is good publicity?).  So, you get six for the price of three in this edition.  Gratuities are most certainly accepted—cash or charge.

TFT: The Temptations

Not every song that will be featured here will be what is generally considered as being “Christian” in the eyes of this world.  For some will be anguished cries from the pit of despair while others will be quite obviously fervent rants of rebellion.  Nonetheless, be assured that they will all be of our Heavenly Father (in one way or another) and I hope that you have been given ears to hear the message.

Papa Was A Rolling Stone
The Temptations
It was the third of September
That day I'll always remember
Yes I will
‘Cause
That was the day
That my daddy died
I never got a chance to see him
Never heard nothin'
But bad things about him
Momma I'm dependin’ on you
To tell me the truth
Momma just hung her head
And said
Son

Papa was a rollin’ stone
Wherever he laid his hat was his home
And when he died
All he left us was alone
Papa was a rollin’ stone
My son yeah
Wherever he laid his hat was his home
And when he died
All he left us was alone

Well well

Hey momma
Is it true what they say
That papa never worked a day
In his life
And momma
Some bad talk goin' round town sayin'
That papa had three outside children
And another wife
And that ain't right
Heard them talking papa
Doin’ some storefront preachin'
Talked about saving souls
And all the time leachin’
Dealin’ in debt
And stealin’ in the name of the Lord
Momma just hung her head
And said

Papa was a rollin’ stone
My son
Wherever he laid his hat was his home
And when he died
All he left us was alone
Hey
Papa was a rollin’ stone
Yeah honey
Wherever he laid his hat was his home
And when he died
All he left us was alone

Hey momma
I heard papa called himself
A jack of all trades
Tell me is that what sent papa
To an early grave
Folks say papa would
Beg
Borrow
Steal
To pay his bills
Hey momma
Folks say papa never was
Much on thinkin’
Spent most of his time
Chasin’ women and drinkin’
Momma I'm dependin’ on you
To tell me the truth
Momma looked up with a tear in her eye
And said
Son

Papa was a rollin’ stone
Well well well well
Hey yeah
Wherever he laid his hat was his home
And when he died
All he left us was alone
Alone
Alone
Alone
Alone
Papa was a rollin’ stone
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Hey yeah
Wherever he laid his hat was his home
And when he died
All he left us was alone
I said hey
Papa was a rollin’ stone
Yes he was
My son
Wherever he laid his hat was his home
And when he died
All he left us was alone
My baby
Well
Yes he was
Papa was a rollin’ stone
Wherever he laid his hat was his home

Smiling Faces Sometimes
The Temptations
Smiling faces
Sometimes
Pretend
 To be your friend
Smiling faces
 Show no traces
Of the evil
That lurks within

Smiling faces
Smiling faces
 sometimes
They don't tell the truth
Smiling faces
Smiling faces
Tell lies
And I got proof

Let me tell ya
The truth is in the eyes
‘Cause the eye don't lie
Amen
Remember
A smile is just a frown
Turned upside down
My friend
Let me tell ya

Smiling faces
Smiling faces
Sometimes
They don't tell the truth
Smiling faces
Smiling faces
Tell lies
And I got proof

Beware
Beware of the handshake
That hides the snake
I'm telling you
Beware
Beware of the pat on the back
It just might
Hold you back
Jealousy
Jealousy
Misery
Misery
Envy
Envy
I tell ya
You can't see behind

Smiling faces
Smiling faces
Sometimes
They don't tell the truth
Smiling faces
Smiling faces
Tell lies
And I got proof
Smiling faces
Smiling faces
Sometimes
They don't tell the truth
Smiling faces
Smiling faces
Tell lies
And I got proof
Smiling faces
Smiling faces
Sometimes
Smiling faces
Smiling faces
Sometimes

Ah
I'm telling you
Beware
Beware of the handshake
That hides the snake
Listen to me now
Beware
Beware of that pat on the back
It just might
Hold you back

Smiling faces
Smiling faces
Sometimes
They don't tell the truth
Smiling faces
Smiling faces
Tell lies
And I got proof

Your enemy
Won't do you no harm
‘Cause you'll know where
He's coming from
Don't let the handshake
And the smile fool ya
Take my advice
I'm only try' to school ya

Smiling faces
Smiling faces
Sometimes
They don't tell the truth
Smiling faces
Smiling faces
Tell lies
And I got proof
Smiling faces
Smiling faces
Sometimes
They don't tell the truth
Smiling faces
Smiling faces
Tell lies
And I got proof

Beware
Beware of the handshake

The impossible task
Is to figure out
Which of the smiles
Is a mask

Listen to me
Did you hear me
The impossible task
Is to figure out
Which of the smiles
Is a mask

Smiling faces
Smiling faces
Sometimes
Don't show the truth
Smiling faces
Smiling faces
Tell lies
And I got proof
Smiling faces
Smiling faces
Sometimes
Smiling faces
Smiling faces
Sometimes

Smiling faces
Smiling faces
Sometimes
They don't tell the truth
Smiling faces
Smiling faces
Tell lies
And I got proof
Smiling faces
Smiling faces
Sometimes
Smiling faces
Smiling faces
Sometimes

Come Monday...Arlynda's Super Bowl Parties

“Come Monday…” is a weekly series that will involve a review of, or commentary about,  websites, movies, documentaries, television shows, sports, music, and whatever else may tickle my fancy at the time.  Be assured that these reviews will be generally positive, as in accordance to the Jimmy Buffett song “Come Monday.”  This is subject to change, however.  In fact, I would be most derelict in my duties to neglect going on a rant every once in a while.  For rants promote change, and change can be good—right?  Therefore, since good is generally considered as being a positive force in 99.3% of the parallel universes that I am aware of, even a rant could be considered as being something positive, and a genuine hissy-fit would be even better (so I’m told).

My longsuffering wife, Arlynda, was not necessarily a football fan before we were married.  Oh, she would be glad to hear of the [Cabool Bulldogs] and/or the [Missouri Tigers] winning, but she had little desire to actually watch a game.  Hence, one of the reasons why the efforts that she has made the past several years to watch the [Super Bowl] with me are so special.

No, the parties that she puts on are nothing spectacular—certainly not in comparison to some.  For she will usually just fix [nachos] and a few other things like that, but it is amazing just how good it all tastes while watching her become so involved in the game.

It could be argued that she had an added vested interest in the game that was played yesterday evening.  For [The Blind Side] is one of her all-time favorite movies, and [Michael Oher] is a starting offensive lineman for the [Baltimore Ravens].

Oh my, there was something for just about everyone to Super Bowl XLVII—with not the least of these involving the head coaches for both teams.  For [John Harbaugh] is the head coach of the Baltimore Ravens, and his younger brother, [Jim], is the head coach of the [San Francisco 49ers].

To be quite honest about it, I do not like Jim Harbaugh much at all.  For he appears to be a jerk in a number of ways, and putting icing on that cake is the fact that he appears to not care a thing about what others think of him.

In all fairness, Jim has done an amazing job of molding the 49ers into a truly great team—with [Vernon Davis] serving as a prime example of that.  For he caught a lot of passes for a lot of yards yesterday evening, and it was just five years ago when he was in danger of being [released] by the team for a number of reasons.

Speaking of stories of redemption, [Ray Lewis], of the Baltimore Ravens, was facing [murder charges] after two men were stabbed to death at a Super Bowl XXXIV party in Atlanta, Georgia in 2000.  Since then, he has become one of the most highly respected (beloved?) players in the game, and the announcement of his retirement after this season was completed surely had much to do with the Baltimore Ravens winning it all—much to the delight of my beloved wife.

Regardless of who wins or loses, I always win when Arlynda throws a Super Bowl party for us.  Of course, that will most definitely not be the case if my beloved [Cowboys] find themselves on the losing end someday, but since they have been doing everything they can to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory lately, it is not looking like I have any reason to be concerned about them even making it that far for several years to come.

A Sunday Drive

Back during my childhood, our parents would often load up my brother and me after Sunday morning church services for a leisurely drive around where we lived.  Even though we were seeing mostly familiar sights, it was still good to see them, and this is why “A Sunday Drive” sounded about right for the name of a weekly series revisiting familiar sites that are well worth seeing again and again.  The link below the image is to the site itself, and the image is linked to the post it was first included in here.

Trib Updates

This is a weekly series that will include a brief summary of the latest articles that have been published on The Tribulation Times Herald-Exhorter.  Hopefully, this will encourage you to go check out some truly outstanding articles that have been published by a number of truly outstanding authors.  Moreover, I hope this will also encourage you to want to become a contributing member/author, as well.  The “Hear Ye!  Hear Ye!” site explanation near the top of the side-bar should answer many of your questions.  Yes, this series also included an “SOS! (Spam On Saturdays)”  segment before, but it just wasn’t working for me.  Therefore, that will be replaced by a republishing of one of the Trib articles.

[ESPN Additions] shows us that Tiger Woods always has a gallery in tow.

[WhiteHeart Wednesday] contains a video and the lyrics for Go Down Nineveh.

[Was It You?] has a video and the lyrics for Kansas’ Point of Know Return.

Around a month ago, I fell out in the front yard of our home.  We had been getting a mix of sleet and snow, and around a half of an inch of it had accumulated by the time I decided that it would be nice to go get our trash can from beside the street after the trash truck had come by.

Just being now able to go get the trash can is something of a miracle to me.  For it is around 100 feet from our front door to where the trash can is placed by the side of the street, and making a roundtrip of over 200 feet would have been out of the question not so very long ago.

It was, however, just after making it maybe 20 feet toward the trash can that I hit a slick spot, and down I went.  So?

No, I did not break anything—not even my pride.  For there are actually times when it is virtually non-existent, and the only thing I was concerned with at the time was getting back on my feet with the outside temperature being rather serious about staying near the 20 degree mark on the Fahrenheit side of the gauge.

On the other hand, it was looking like getting back on my feet was going to be problem.  For where I went down was at least 15 feet from anything that I could pull myself back up with, and Arlynda and her mother was not home—not to mention not expected back for several hours.

I was not to a state of panic yet, but I was getting there in a hurry when I clearly heard, “Just try it,” as a thought about getting up off of the ground like people normally do crossed my mind.  So I did try it while thinking that I had nothing to lose, and up I went!

No, I cannot naturally blame you for thinking that it was no big deal, but it was indeed a miracle to me.  For that was the first time I have been able to just get up off of the ground/floor with just the use of my legs in several years.  In fact, I cannot remember the last time I was able to do it before, and I would not be at all shocked to learn that it was 6-7 years ago.

Yes, some consideration should be given to the fact that I was around 100 pounds lighter than I had been for a while at the time, but you might feel differently after trying to take a walk in my shoes.  For aside from my right knee still being about as stable as a bowl of jello, I think I tore a muscle in the back of my right thigh around a year and a half ago, which lets me know that it has not healed properly every waking minute.

Since then, I was allowed and enabled to experience another small miracle.  For I have not driven our car (nor any other vehicle, for that matter) in 3-4 years because of being too fat to fit behind the steering wheel, and I was able to go take it to be inspected a couple of days ago.

I am sorry, it was a trip that I think you would have enjoyed watching (being sarcastic here).  For there I was, with around 3,000,000 miles behind the wheel of a big truck, acting plumb shaky behind the wheel of a 1994 Ford Tempo on a trip that lasted for maybe a mile total in very light traffic on a bright and sunny day.

No, I do not plan on starting to look for reasons to go out for a spin.  For I still feel like I am suffering from a fairly severe case of the flu each and every waking minute, but it is good to know that I can run an errand for my longsuffering wife when it is desperately needed.  Be assured that there will more to come about our changing circumstances later on.

Sites To See

The SOLE purpose of this weekly series is to help call attention to sites that I think many would find most interesting—in one way or another.  Just to be clear, inclusion in this series is not necessarily meant as a recommendation, and I have included sites that are rather disturbing to me.  The link below each image is to the site itself, and each image is linked to the particular post from which it was taken when applicable.  Please, go see for yourself.  Oh, and as of August 10, 2012, I will be no longer including sites that have auto-play and word verification engaged.
