ATF: White Lines

This weekly series will include as many of my all-time favorite (ATF) tunes as I can get my grubby little hands on (so to speak).  Now, each one included in each edition will have some connection with the other—albeit only as a figment of my imagination, but they will not be numbered.  For I just cannot bring myself to rate some higher than others.  So, this will not be a countdown, but if you are enjoying them as much as I do, it won’t matter.  Besides, with no countdown, this could go on forever and ever!  Oh, and despite the fact that there is absolutely no way your musical tastes could be as exquisite as mine, I welcome any suggestions you might dare to make.  For I am, after all, quite magnanimous by nature.

Never Been Any Reason
Head East
Did you see any action
Did you make any friends
Would you like some affection
Before I leave again
I've been walkin’ behind you
Since you've been able to see
There's never been any reason
For you to think about me

Did you have any bad dreams
Did you break any glass
Would you be my companion
Is there even a chance
You've been talkin’ in circles
Since I've been able to cry
There's never been any reason
For ever tellin’ me why
Yeah
Yeah

Save my life
I'm goin’ down for the last time
Woman with the sweet lovin'
Better than a white line
Bring a good feelin’
Ain't had in such a long time
Save my life
I'm goin’ down for the last time

Have you ever been lonely
Do you have any fun
Do you ever think of me
I'm just no one
Yeah
You never give me no answer
You never tell me the truth
There's never been any reason
For me to think about you
There's never been any reason
There's never been any reason
Hey
Hey
There's never been any reason

Save my life
I'm goin’ down for the last time
Woman with the sweet lovin'
Better than a white line
Don't you know she could
Bring a good feelin’
Ain't had in such a long time
Save my life
I'm goin’ down for the last time
Whoa
Save my life
I'm goin’ down for the last time
Save my life
I'm goin’ down for the last time
Save my life
I'm goin’ down for the last time
Save my life
I'm goin’ down for the last time
Save my life
I'm goin’ down for the last time

***NOTE***
That is not Garth Brooks singing, nor is it his backup band playing, but in the absence of the real thing on YouTube, this video will just have to do.  Besides, it is arguable that this cover is better than the real thing in at least some respects.

Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old)
Garth Brooks
This ol' highway's gettin’ longer
Seems there ain't no end in sight
To sleep would be best
But I just can't afford to rest
I've got to ride in Denver tomorrow night
I called the house
But no one answered
For the last two weeks
No one's been home
I guess she's through with me
To tell the truth
I just can't see
What's kept the woman holdin’ on this long

And the white line's gettin’ longer
And the saddle's getting’ cold
I'm much too young to feel this damn old
All my cards are on the table
With no ace left in the hole
I'm much too young to feel this damn old

The competition's gettin’ younger
Tougher broncs
You know I can't recall
A worn out tape of Chris LeDoux
Lonely women
And bad booze
Seem to be the only friends I've left at all

And the white line's gettin’ longer
And the saddle's gettin’ cold
I'm much too young to feel this damn old
All my cards are on the table
With no ace left in the hole
I'm much too young to feel this damn old

Lord I'm much too young to feel this damn old

    1. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Shadow!!! Never Been Any Reason seemed to be playing on a classic rock station every time I headed home from after trying to spend some time with a lady who simply did not want me around all that much in the early '90s, and this helped me to finally get the message. A couple of years later, she was murdered by her then husband when she came home while he was doing a drug deal out of their home.

    1. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Stephen!!! Much Too Young really hit home while I was out there on the truck and traveling at least a thousand miles on many a day.

    1. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Karen!!! I must admit that I did not recognize Peace Frogs until Robbie started playing it. Please do not think much less of me, but I was never much of a Doors fan. However, I will have at least one of their songs in this series later on.

  4. The first was tolerable but the second was one of those strange unmusical C&W things that sound like a cat is having an operation. Tsk!

    1. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Ann!!! I would think you would have heard Never Been Any Reason on the radio back in the 70s, but unless you were listening to country stations in the late 80s, you probably have never heard Much Too Young before. In any event, I hope you liked them.

  7. I was happy when I heard Garth Brooks was back performing again after quite a lengthy sabbatical.

    1. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Lee!!! I have some very mixed feelings about Garth. For there is no denying his talents, but he sure seems to be as greedy as they come. By the way, Pure Country is a George Strait anti-Garth movie.

    2. I love George Strait...and I love that movie. I still have the VCR of it here. "I Cross My Heart" is a beautiful song...it always causes me to become misty-eyed when I see it.

I wasn't aware it was an anti-Garth movie. Brooks first album was influenced by Strait.

I can't comment on your comment re Brooks, other than to say he was out of sight and action for nigh on 13 years, to spend time with his family, except for intermittent performances; that doesn't appear to show greed to me; but perhaps you know more than I do on that. He certainly brought a whole new audience to, and a whole new wave of interest in country music when he hit the charts and our ears in 1989. Everyone sat up in interest and took notice.

Perhaps some might say he was greedy when he criticized stores selling second-hand CDs, because of the loss in royalties - is that the reason for your comment about him being greedy?

I can understand his point, though, even though, I have, at times, bought second-hand records and cassettes (I've never bought a second-hand CD, though - not for any reason I can think of at the moment). He probably would be even more critical of all the illegal online downloading that goes on these days. Watch this space! :)

    3. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Lee!!! In all fairness, it may be more on the recording company than him, but in any event, just try to find an authentic video/audio recording of any of his songs on YouTube. Every once in awhile, one will be uploaded by an individual and then taken down almost immediately. Yes, an artist should be able to collect all that they have coming to them, but there is also taking it way too far.

In regards to Pure Country, Strait's character is a play off of Garth Brooks--only with Strait's character being opposed to the over-the-top concerts while Garth has been quite vocal about wanting his concerts to be like those of KISS during their peak. It worked out beautifully in the movie, but in real-life, I would rather go to one of Garth's concerts than George's.
