ATF: Singular Obsessions

This weekly series will include as many of my all-time favorite (ATF) tunes as I can get my grubby little hands on (so to speak).  Now, each one included in each edition will have some connection with the other—albeit only as a figment of my imagination, but they will not be numbered.  For I just cannot bring myself to rate some higher than others.  So, this will not be a countdown, but if you are enjoying them as much as I do, it won’t matter.  Besides, with no countdown, this could go on forever and ever!  Oh, and despite the fact that there is absolutely no way your musical tastes could be as exquisite as mine, I welcome any suggestions you might dare to make.  For I am, after all, quite magnanimous by nature.

One
Three Dog Night
One is the loneliest number
That you'll ever do
Two can be as bad as one
It's the loneliest number
Since the number one-un
No is the saddest experience
You'll ever know
Yes it's the saddest experience
You'll ever know
'Cause one is the loneliest number
That you'll ever do
One is the loneliest number
Whoa-oh
Worse than two

It's just no good anymore
Since you went away
Now I spend my time
Just making rhymes
Of yesterday

One
Is the loneliest
Number
One
Is the loneliest
Number
One
Is the loneliest number
That you'll ever do
One
Is the loneliest
One
Is the loneliest
One
Is the loneliest number
That you'll ever do

It's just no good anymore
Since you went away

Number
One
Is the loneliest
Number
One
Is the loneliest
Number
One
Is the loneliest number
That you'll ever do
Number
One
Is the loneliest
Number
One
Is the loneliest
Number
One
Is the loneliest number
That you'll ever do
Number
One
One is the loneliest number
That you'll ever do
Number
One
Is the loneliest number
That you'll ever do
Number
One
Is the loneliest number
That you'll ever do

One
Metallica
I can’t remember anything
Can’t tell if this is true or dream
Deep down inside I feel to scream
This terrible silence stops me
Now that the war is through with me
I’m waking up
I cannot see
That there’s not much left of me
Nothing is real but pain now

Hold my breath as I
Wish for death
Oh please God
Wake me

Back in the womb it’s much too real
In pumps life that I must feel
But can’t look forward to reveal
Look to the time when I’ll live
Fed through the tube that sticks in me
Just like a wartime novelty
Tied to machines that make me be
Cut this life off from me

Hold my breath as I
Wish for death
Oh please God
Wake me

Now the world is gone
I’m just one
Oh God
Help me
Hold my breath as I
Wish for death
Oh please God
Help me

Darkness
Imprisoning me
All that I see
Absolute horror
I cannot live
I cannot die
Trapped in myself
Body my holding cell

Landmine
Has taken my sight
Taken my speech
Taken my hearing
Taken my arms
Taken my legs
Taken my soul
Left me with a life in Hell

  1. sorry my taste is not as exquisite as yours I never heard of the first one Probably from before my time ;)
Metallica is a bit to dark for me. My golden oldies are Santana, Led Zeppelin, the moody blues, eric clapton, Gary Moore and more and more Maybe not exquisite but superb :)

    1. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Marja!!! Be assured that I am more attracted to the instrumental play than the lyrics to Metallica's One. As far as your musical tastes go, Led Zeppelin has already been included twice, as has Clapton, and your others are coming. In fact, Santana is scheduled to make a first appearance next Thursday (October 20th, on my side of the IDL). So, methinks your tastes are fairly exquisite, as well! (LOL?)

    2. Oops, I just had another PRACTICE senior moment without realizing it until just now, my dear Marja. For the 20th of October is next Monday--not Thursday! Sigh.

  2. I hadn't realised Three Dog Night did 'One' - I know the cover by Aimee Mann. 3DN had a big hit in the UK with 'Mama Told Me Not To Come' - unforgettable!

    1. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Mike!!! Mama Told Me Not To Come is scheduled for this coming New Year's Day. Hey, back in the day, I was a bigger fan of Three Dog Night than The Beatles. So, I will have several more of their songs before this series is over.

  3. I've heard and sang along with the Three Dog Night song One many times over the years but it never occurred to me until I was reading the lyrics how repetitive they are

    1. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Ann!!! It's the same here, but that doesn't matter to us--right?

  4. I love being "one" and an only one. I never get lonely. I never have. I enjoy my own company, space and privacy...shared only with my two furry rascals. :)

    1. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Cindy!!! Yes, in regards to individualism, one is supremely lonely to most of us, but when one is allowed and enabled to truly become as one with another, it is absolutely amazing.

  6. Yep - agree with 3 Dog Night (Jeremiah was also a favorite! and perhaps a good friend of yours also). Metallica - not so much. How about 'Time' by the Alan Parsons Project ? (oh, and I have about 500+ other favorites).

    1. Thanks for stopping by, my dear Rick!!! Yes, Jeremiah is a very good friend of mine, as well, and has been already included in this series. Be assured that at least three Alan Parsons songs are scheduled to be included in this series later on.
