TWO FOR TUESDAY

Not every song that will be featured here will be what is generally considered as being “Christian” in the eyes of this world. For some will be anguished cries from the pit of despair, and others will be quite obviously ferverent rants of rebellion. Nonetheless, be assured that they will all be of our Heavenly Father (in one way or another) and I hope that you have been given ears to hear the message.

Copperhead Road
Steve Earle
Well my name’s John Lee Pettimore
Same as my daddy and his daddy before
You hardly ever saw Grandaddy down here
He only came to town about twice a year
He’d buy a hundred pounds of yeast and some copper line
Everybody knew that he made moonshine
Now the revenue man wanted Grandaddy bad
He headed up the holler with everything he had
It’s before my time but I’ve been told
He never come back from Copperhead Road

Grandaddy ran the whiskey in a big block Dodge
Bought it at an auction at the Mason’s Lodge
Johnson County Sheriff painted on the side
Just shot a coat of primer then he looked inside
Well him and my uncle tore that engine down
I still remember that rumblin’ sound
Well the sheriff came around in the middle of the night
Heard mama cryin’ knew somethin’ wasn’t right
He was headed down to Knoxville with the weekly road
You could smell the whiskey burnin’ down Copperhead Road

I volunteered for the Army on my birthday
They draft the white trash first around here anyway
I done two tours of duty in Vietnam
I came home with a brand new plan
I take the seed from Colombia and Mexico
I just plant it up the holler down Copperhead Road
And now the D.E.A.’s got a chopper in the air
I wake up screamin’ like I’m back over there
I learned a thing of two from Charlie don’t you know
You better stay away from Copperhead Road

Copperhead Road

Copperhead Road

Copperhead Road

Feel All Right
Steve Earle
I was born my papa’s son
A wanderin’ eye and a smokin’ gun
Now some of you would live through me
Lock me up and throw away the key
Or just find a place to hid away
Hope that I’ll just go away
Ha

I feel all right
I feel all right tonight
I feel all right
I feel all right tonight

I’ll bring you precious contraband
And ancient tales from distant lands
Of conquerors and concubines
And conjurers from darker times
Betrayal and conspiracy
Sacrilege and heresy

I feel all right
I feel all right tonight
I feel all right
I feel all right tonight

I got everything you want or need
Your darkest fear
Your fondest dream
I ask you questions
Tell you lies
Criticize and sympathize
Be careful what you wish for friend
Because I’ve been to Hell
And now I’m aback again

I feel all right
I feel all right tonight

I got everything you want or need
Your darkest fear
Your fondest dream
I ask you questions
Tell you lies
Criticize and sympathize
Yeah be careful what you wish for friend
Because I’ve been to Hell
And now I’m aback again

I feel all right
Yeah I feel all right tonight
Yeah I feel all right
And I feel all right tonight

Feel all right

Feel all right

  3. Thanks for stopping by again, my dear Ann!!! Copperhead Road is one of my all-time favorite songs--mostly because of its Celtic(?) sound. If you didn't get it, the video for Feel All Right is the closing montage from Season 2 of HBO's The Wire, and Steve Earle had a recurring role as a recovering addict (Waylon) in the series, which grew to be a fairly prominent part by the 5th (and final) season of the show.

  4. Thanks for stopping by again, my dear Sandie. Steve Earle has had his moments in the spotlight over the years, but he never gained as much notice as I believe he should have. It is reported that this has much to do with him being an addict in real life, and that he has "upset" more than his share of the powers that be in record business.

  5. I've heard the Copperhead Road song before. Wow--lots of tunes today, pally!

How's things with the son?? Kids will drive you crazy, won't they??? :) But in a good way most times.

  6. Thanks for stopping by again, my dear Lin!!! Things are wonderful with my son--just as long as we don't try to get him to do something that he doesn't want to do.

P.S.: After Ann pointed out that you didn't make it last Sunday, I missed you.
