The Mamas & The Papas vs. The Beach Boys

California Dreamin’
The Mamas & The Papas
All the leaves are brown
All the leaves are brown
And the sky is gray
And the sky is gray
I’ve been for a walk
I’ve been for a walk
On a winter’s day
On a winter’s day
I’d be safe and warm
I’d be safe and warm
If I was in L.A.
If I was in L.A.
California dreamin’
California dreamin’
On such a winter’s day

Stopped into a church
I passed along the way
Well I got down on my knees
Got down on my knees
And I pretend to pray
I pretend to pray
You know the preacher likes the cold
Preacher likes the cold
He knows I’m gonna stay
Knows I’m gonna stay
California dreamin’
California dreamin’
On such a winter’s day

All the leaves are brown
All the leaves are brown
And the sky is gray
And the sky is gray
I’ve been for a walk
I’ve been for a walk
On a winter’s day
On a winter’s day
If I didn’t tell her
If I didn’t tell her
I could leave today
I could leave today
California dreamin’
California dreamin’
On such a winter’s day
California dreamin’
On such a winter’s day
California dreamin’
On such a winter’s day

California Dreamin’
The Beach Boys
All the leaves are brown
All the leaves are brown
And the sky is gray
I’ve been for a walk
Walk walk
On a winter’s day
I’d be safe and warm
Warm warm
If I was in L.A.
California dreamin’
California dreamin’
On such a winter’s day

Stopped into a church
I passed along the way
Well I got down on my knees
Got down on my knees
And I pretend to pray
I pretend to pray
You know the preacher likes the cold
Preacher likes the cold
He knows I’m gonna stay
Knows I’m gonna stay
California dreamin’
California dreamin’
On such a winter’s day

All the leaves are brown
All the leaves are brown
And the sky is gray
And the sky is gray
I’ve been for a walk
I’ve been for a walk
On a winter’s day
On a winter’s day
I’d be safe and warm
I’d be safe and warm
If I was in L.A.
If I was in L.A.
California dreamin’

California dreamin’
On such a winter’s day
California dreamin’
On such a winter’s day
California dreamin’
California dreamin’
On such a winter’s day

California dreamin’
On such a winter’s day

  1. Thanks for stopping by again, my dear Adullamite!!! Yeah, I am leaning that way, but The Beach Boys did an incredible job with it.

  2. The Beach Boys version is total garbage - why did they cover so many songs when they had plenty of their own! They had a particular sound and layering that on someone else's musical vision just doesn't seem to have worked out well - especially when the BB's are covering perfection! No win situation for them...

  3. Thanks for stopping by again, my dear Grace!!! I hear you, and I had no idea that they covered this song until I went to put this together. For a punk version is what I was planning on, and I would hate to hear what you would have to say about that.

  4. Here's a theme for you: A fast song that is re-done as a slow song. For example, Bobby Freeman's "Do You Wanna Dance" is the original fast and then Bette Midler did it slow. I like them both...there must be other examples...

  8. Thanks for stopping by again, my dear Grace!!! Yeah, that's the kind of contrast I like to have, and when it comes to his turn, I will include her version of "Do You Wanna Dance."

  9. Thanks for stopping by again, my dear Mike!!! Yeah, they both did incredibly well with this song, but I must stick with The Mamas & The Papas--mostly on account of how much better Michelle Phillips looks than Brian Wilson.

  11. Thanks for stopping by again, my dear Sandee!!! As I told Grace, I didn't know that The Beach Boys covered this song until I went to put this together, and when I heard what a wonderful job they did with it, my original plan went by the wayside.

  12. Thanks for stopping by again, my dear Ann!!! Yeah, and what made it even harder on me was that 12-string acoustic guitar on The Beach Boys version. For I am like a moth drawn to a flame when I hear one.
